David Lynch, a filmmaker, musician, and artist, whose surrealist work continues to have a cult-like following, died at age 78, his family announced on his Facebook page on Thursday.

Lynch's family did not reveal his cause of death.

"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time," his family wrote. "There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'

"It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way."

Lynch was nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars in 1981 for "The Elephant Man." He was also Oscar-nominated for Best Director in 1987 for "Blue Velvet" and in 2002 for "Mulholland Drive."

He also received critical acclaim for directing television's "Twin Peaks" for three seasons.

His first full-length feature film, “Eraserhead,” released in 1977, continues to resonate with fans.

Although his last feature film that he directed was in 2006, he continued to lead short films and music videos in addition to returning to direct a third season of "Twin Peaks" in 2019.

In 2019, Lynch earned a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award.

He did smoke a lot, so that didn't help him.

Even so, hearing this makes me feel old.

This film scene from Blue Velvet still scares the h*ll out me... Dennis Hopper sure knew how to act.

Elephant Man is an excellent film.

I saw Eraserhead in Naples ,Italy , the only non Italian in the place , the theatre was way up inside of the “off limits” area known as the Gut.

The film was in English with Italian subtitles .

At times I would be the only person laughing. At other times the whole theatre would roar with laughter and I had no idea what they were laughing about. Something in the translation maybe.

Yes. Why didn’t the story mention Dune?

That movie gave me nightmares, like horror movies as saw as an 8 year old, and I was 22 when I first watched it....

He definitely had a unique vision. Wild at Heart is a favorite of mine. RIP David Lynch.

Lynch had to evacuate his home last week due to the fires. Ironically, the evacuation path was Mulholland Drive.

I don’t know if his house was burned, but he got out safely. I wonder if this somehow contributed to his death though.

I watched Eraserhead one night while having a 101-degree fever with the flu.

It almost made sense.

They didn’t mention Dune because Justin Boggs of ScrippsNews sucks at his job.

I have to wonder if Justin is real. He might be a AI bot.
