A US military base in Ohio briefly closed its airspace heading into the weekend after small drones were spotted in the area, officials confirmed to Business Insider on Monday.
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is the latest military installation to report drone activity in its vicinity, though, unlike some of the others, it actually interfered with operations.

Drones, especially small quadcopters, can be easily purchased for a few hundred dollars, and as the war in Ukraine has shown, they are surprisingly versatile. In the hands of an extremist, spy or even a careless enthusiast, these systems pose a threat the Defense Department is scrambling to counter as it increasingly factors them into day-to-day operations, from battle to base security.
Within the past few weeks, there have been multiple confirmed drone sightings near two military installations in New Jersey, as well as reports of drones near US Coast Guard operations and critical infrastructure. The Department of Defense hasn't expressed great concern, saying it doesn't have evidence the drones are a threat, but it has expressed frustration over this activity. One official called the activity "irresponsible."

Wright-Patterson hosts the Air Force Research Laboratory, the 655th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Wing, and the 445th Airlift Wing, as well as other units. The base and its two lengthy runways make it a key installation for the US military.
The Air Force spokesperson said that, in general, depending on the facility, there could be many military aircraft taking off and landing. Some of the sites also host sensitive assets, making it a risk for operators to fly small drones in the vicinity. Drones don't have to be malign to be a problem.

The airspace over Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was reopened after the drones left the area. The base closed its airspace for about four hours late Friday into early Saturday due to drone activity. Once the drones were no longer present, normal operations resumed.

I am a former Army JAG officer who was on active duty. A few years ago I was in Charlottesville, VA where the Army JAG school is at University of VA and wanted to stop by to see it again, I hadn’t seen it since the 1980’s. At the recently installed guard gate was a doorbell, so I rang it, explained I was a former JAG officer and could I take a picture. I thought it was nice of me to even ask.
Oh absolutely not, no you may not take a picture I was told. Oh brother. I mean, there are satellites taking pictures constantly, and you are not letting me take a picture with an iphone? But I said ok. The person answering didn’t even say anything like great to hear from you, thank you for visiting. It was ridiculous.
So, my husband and I just didn’t take any pictures and left and went on our merry way.
So, drones? Big deal. Again, satellites are taking multiple pictures every day.

Military airfields will need to be effectively protected.
It is probably possible to do millions of dollars of damage to a military aircraft by use of a small drone.
Perhaps cannon launching canisters with nets could down small drones.

Again, satellites are taking pictures and listening to conversations. Big deal if drones are flying over. What’s the difference?

Academically, the probability of hitting a drone with a pistol is so low it doesn’t really matter
Somewhere out there, there is web site visited by a host of teen age and very young people who are the drone equivalent of a crowd source. They all have drones but nothing really useful to do with them. They are drone sourcing all over and creating a massively comical reaction amongst the powerless officialdom.

There are around 100,000 federal laws and regulations (nobody knows for sure). So, yeah. If they want to pin something on you, they can.

Lower angle can show different and better details. Close-ups and resolution can reveal more stuff. While satellites have better cameras they are still 200 to 20,000 miles up. Not to mention cloud cover, atmospheric issues and just plain dirt/pollution.
Hypothetically speaking, if you could down a drone with a pistol, you'd be Ed McGivern reincarnated.
Most (spy) satellites are owned by state actors. Obviously this is not always true, but most state actors have relatively stable geopolitical relationships or a kind of stasis. Most commercial satellites (that publish) are not high resolution, and make agreements with governments not to show (or to redact) sensitive information. What is more, the information is not real time or even recent.
Drones, on the other hand, pose the risk of having realtime information revealed. Same with you going to a base and snapping a picture. It could be sent to someone or published online in moments.
Why they wouldn’t be shooting down drones and just closing airspace, I think, is revealing.
The drones are US Government Property and their use is being covered up. First place to look.
