~ The FReeper Canteen Remembers ~ ~ Veterans Day 2024 ~
Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. However, most Americans confuse this holiday with Memorial Day, reports the Department of Veterans Affairs. What's more, some Americans don't know why we commemorate our Veterans on Nov.11. It's imperative that all Americans know the history of Veterans Day so that we can honor our former service members properly. Memorial Day honors service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. Deceased veterans are also remembered on Veterans Day but the day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.

Canteen Mission Statement
Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allies' military and family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans". With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971. Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11.

The White House Office October 8, 1954 Dear Mr. Higley: I have today signed a proclamation calling upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, November 11, 1954 as Veterans Day. It is my earnest hope that all veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry will join hands to insure proper and widespread observance of this day. With the thought that it will be most helpful to coordinate the planning, I am suggesting the formation of a Veterans Day National Committee. In view of your great personal interest as well as your official responsibilities, I have designated you to serve as Chairman. You may include in the Committee membership such other persons as you desire to select and I am requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch to assist the Committee in its work in every way possible. I have every confidence that our Nation will respond wholeheartedly in the appropriate observance of Veterans Day, 1954. Sincerely, DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Please remember that The Canteen is here to support and entertain our troops and veterans and their families, and is family friendly. |

At least they both survived and that’s what counts. LOL
I get to cuss my alarm in the morning because I’m getting up early for the Veterans Day ceremony in Winchester.
Nope, didn’t do much of anything today. Nothing that needed to be done so I stayed in.
There’s no smoke these days, thank goodness. They’ve gotten more rain down south the past week and that helped get the fires under control.
I haven’t checked the rain gauge yet but I’ll be surprised if there’s more than a .1 of an inch in it. Maybe there will be because there was one shower hard enough, I could hear it hitting the roof - - for about 15 seconds.

Yep, they survived. This time. LOL! But I’m sure getting sleepy now.
I hope your alarm survives your early-up in the morning. Enjoy the ceremony tomorrow. Is it at a particular place? I wonder if the museum will be having some sort of event.

Fortunately, I don’t have to get up as early as you did this morning but I do need to get started on the cat stuff so I can hit the sack. I ran across the video you reposted at X about the young man who was the first Neuralink recipient and am about halfway through with it. Very interesting. But I need to mark the time so I can pick up from there tomorrow.
The ceremony will be at the Annex, where some of the city and county gov’t. offices are and the VA office is there as well. It’ll be held outside and there’s plenty of room for parking and for the crowd.
The museum never did anything more for Veterans Day than be open, and Freddy and I worked. He passed away a few months ago so I don’t know if they’ll be open this year.
Heading out. Have a good rest of the night and sleep late! Catch ya tomorrow.

Thanks for reminding me! I need to finish watching that video, too. I’ve seen several posts from Elon talking about Neuralink, and I’m hoping that watching all of that will answer some questions I have.
Enjoy the day. I hope, since it’s outside, that the weather will be nice for the ceremony. Sleep well....see ya tomorrow!

November 11
Loving Our Enemy
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
Matthew 5:44During World War II, US Navy medical corpsman Lynne Weston went ashore with the marines as they stormed enemy-held islands. Inevitably, there were gruesome casualties. He did his best to patch up wounded combatants for evacuation. On one occasion, his unit encountered an enemy soldier with a bad abdominal wound. Due to the nature of the injury, the man couldn’t be given water. To keep him alive, Petty Officer Weston administered intravenous plasma.
“Save that plasma for our fellas, Swabby!” bellowed one of the marines. Petty Officer Weston ignored him. He knew what Jesus would do: “love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44).
Jesus did far more than speak those challenging words; He lived them. When a hostile mob seized Him and took Him to the high priest, “the men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him” (Luke 22:63). The abuse continued all the way through His sham trials and execution. Jesus didn’t merely endure it. When Roman soldiers crucified Him, He prayed for their forgiveness (23:34).
We may not encounter a literal enemy who’s trying to kill us. But everyone knows what it’s like to endure ridicule and scorn. Our natural reaction is to respond in anger. Jesus raised the bar: “pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).
Today, let’s walk in that kind of love, showing kindness as Jesus did—even to our enemies.
Reflect & Pray
How do you respond to those who despise or misunderstand you? How does God want you to respond?
Heavenly Father, please help me love others the way You love me.

It was a perfect morning weather-wise for the ceremony, and the ceremony was very nice. There was a large turnout too.
Afterwards, the vets were invited to the VFW for a free lunch and I know they ate well. That place serves some good food!
I’ll finish watch the Neuralink video tonight. Just started watching Barry Cunningham and he’s started off with a bang!

I wrote this two years ago, and it is registered with the WRITERS GUILD. It is a national disgrace that we have over 30,000 homeless vets. I'd like to see it become a screenplay (who knows someone?). We cannot rest until we have ZERO veterans living on the street.
A young woman goes on a cross country and dangerous quest to find a man who had shared letters for years with her late grandpa, but who had one day gone off the grid.
THE SEARCH FOR SGT DRAKE
Her quest began in earnest, the mission very clear
A man for whom she searched and searched she thought was very near
She’d been through all the shelters, so many in L.A.
But her sixth sense had told her that today would be the day
As she walked by the homeless, it caused her heart to break
She held a picture, very old, a man named SGT Drake
And then she saw a certain man and she gave it a try
When she showed him the picture, the man began to cry
She hugged him and she promised no more days out on the street
Then said a prayer and thanked the Lord that they could finally meet
The man, of course, was curious from where this angel came
She told him her long story and her late grandpa’s name
Another hug, while crying, she whispered in his ear
“Had you not saved my grandpa’s life, then I would not be here”

Yep, I remember my talking about all the time he spent at the VFW and how much he enjoyed their food.
I have the video bookmarked, ready to watch this evening. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the young man’s story.
You’ll enjoy Barry’s video, if you aren’t already. A lotta smackdowns on the Lefties that are beautimous! LOL
