SALEM - Salem is the latest city in Massachusetts to test out a guaranteed income program that would give thousands of dollars directly to its poorest residents.
The Uplift Salem initiative will give $500 a month to 100 Salem residents for an entire year. There's no restrictions on how recipients can spend the income.
"We want Salem to be an affordable place for everyone, and a guaranteed income program offers an innovative approach to help achieve that goal," Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo said in a statement.

If it's income why isn't the IRS taxing it ?

Where will the giveaway money come from? Bet they don’t have a surplus... and cities and states can’t print the stuff, at least not yet.
So what will those wise city leaders now take away from their hard-working citizens IN ADDITION TO their tax dollars? Police and fire protection? Street cleaning and repair? Reliable water and power? Libraries?
Or will they just jack taxes until folks get fed up and become conservatives and either leave or vote ‘em out?

Nah, that one’s in NC. “Winston-Salem”
This is the city that became famous for killing witches. Now they’re more enlightened — they HIRE their witches to teach in their schools and work in their government, and some of ‘em they elect to run the place! Into the ground, apparently.

They have a great museum in that town, the Peabody and Essex Museum, but the rest of the town is not someplace I like.
And every year, I hear people expressing their wish to go to Salem on Halloween.
Those people are idiots. That place gets absolutely creepy and stupid for the month before and the month after. It is like every single weirdo in the country has a need to make a pilgrimage there.
So the fact they will do this does not surprise me one single bit.

They ‘hire’ their Witches?
Some Math and English tutors probably could have been hired using that same fiscal budget.

Wow! Guaranteed income! How do I sign up for this? Oh, wait … I work like a dog for my money, so I’m not poor! Oh darn.

How about giving
them 500 per month for 40 hours work for the city?
