Citing safety, authorities are closing two Milwaukee-area public parking lots where people have been living in tents, trailers and cars.
“The environments continue to degrade and become less safe every day,” the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said Monday.
“First responders including law enforcement, fire service personnel and paramedics are responding to a heightened number of emergency calls regarding dangerous and unsafe activity in and around the lots,” the department said.
The lots are park-and-ride lots where people can catch a bus or another ride. The state said it will begin closing two lots and a portion of a third, starting Oct. 21.
A housing agency has helped more than 80 people find housing, but more people continue to enter the lots, the Transportation Department said.
“More and more people are finding themselves priced out of the rental,” Steven Shea, a member of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, recently told TV station Fox 6.
There have been assaults, gunshots and drug overdoses at the lots. Police responded to a fight in late August that was recorded on video.
“Park-and-ride lots are not safe or suitable places for anyone to live," Assistant Deputy Secretary Joel Nilsestuen said.

Gosh! Things are so bad that many of these people are so desperate that the best they can do is to camp out in public parking lots! This is bad!
The solution? Close those public parking lots!
Where will they go? Who cares?! We can blame Trump later.
This is the sign of Democrat government -- they don't even attempt to solve any problems. They just shift the problem to a new venue.
That seems to be the common solution, rather than deal with something they take it away from everyone.
San Diego had an issue with homeless drunks so they ended drinking on the beach which affected many 100s of thousands of people and tourists and their activities, guess who it didn’t affect.
Must be Trump’s fault.....snx.
These were just another watermelon kickback boondoggle that should have never been built anyway.
All the problems we had with waysides but without any of those pesky families wandering around to report things they shouldnt be seeing.
They could always shift some of the homeless over towards Marquette University.
The students in the dorms could take some in as extra credit towards graduation. So could some of the professors who live in the area.
After all, it is a Jesuit institution. Time for them to practice what they preach.
“What would Timmy do?”
AMEN!!!
How does closing a parking lot keep bums out?
They paved paradise…
Idea. Have tourists and people wanting to shop or have food and beverages in town park two miles out and take shuttle buses in and out on a dirt field. One bus every 45 minutes.
Wave to the homeless and illegals as they go by.
RE: to degrade and become less safe every day
Hey, the TV panelists will say a few women grabbed and raped, a few with a blade slash across their cheek and only once a day or so someone murdered by an ice pick through their heart-—is only a FEW.
Not everybody.
In the university town where I used to work I knew a coworker who used to sit in the small city park near office buildings and have lunch, until so many drug using, dirty derelicts started coming up to her she had to leave. One said “You think you’re too good for me, girl? I been watching you. You’ll be sorry soon.”
And when a new owner made a vacant building at street level into a small cafe, they had to make the choice I predicted.
They could have the outdoor seating one by one taken over by homeless types sitting all day, or they could get the cops to evict non customers. Nearly always the cowards gave in and the outdoor seating was over for decent customers.
We started seeing this in Portland back in 20010.
Long lines of homeless and unemployed.
It is far worse now in Portland and now I hear its expanded to San Jose CA.
Ground zero to Silicon Valley and the most amount of millionaires per sqft in the USA.
“How does closing a parking lot keep bums out?”
Good question. Beats me! How DOES one ‘close’ a wide open expanse of concrete? Will the bums go away if no one parks there?
While the article says it has found housing for 80 or so people, the remaining ‘unhoused’ will just move to the highway underpass ‘Tent Cities’ where the Milwaukee County Taxpayers won’t hardly see them at all! ;)
NOT FOR KEEPING BUMS OUT
FOR GIVING THEM REAL ESTATE TO USE.
Liberals then…start the “Park and Ride” lots to save the earth.
Liberals today…end the “Park and Ride” lots to save the homeless. Screw the earth.
