Voting starts Wednesday in the annual Fat Bear Week contest at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, with viewers picking their favorite among a dozen brown bears fattened up to survive the winter.
The contest, which is in its 10th year, celebrates the resiliency of the 2,200 brown bears that live in the preserve on the Alaska Peninsula, which extends from the state’s southwest corner toward the Aleutian Islands. The animals gorge on the abundant sockeye salmon that return to the Brooks River, sometimes chomping the fish in midair as they try to hurdle a small waterfall and make their way upstream to spawn.

Who here is packing on the pounds in anticipation of hibernating this winter? 😁
This dock strike has me worried so I’m storing a few extra pounds just in case.
Sounds like a good idea what all the crazy news this set 10 days. Hurricanes, strikes, Mideast fighting, etc.
I’ve been to Katmai National Park in 2010, specifically Hallo Bay. That was where Tim Treadwell and his girlfriend were killed years before.
There was no shortage of bears. You could get as close as 100 feet of them. They had no interest in you, provided you did not smell of fish or provoke them.
I’ve always learned never go into Bear Country without a friend who can run faster than you.
Than I’d say you’re screwed 😳
Sleep for three months after binge eating? Is there a sign up sheet for this?
Too easy. In order to vote you should need to have a friend take a video of you smacking the bear you’re voting for on the butt and then posting it to TikTok. If you can talk a liberal friend into doing it while you hold the camera you get two votes.
