Did you say speculate??. I think it’s pretty obvious MJ had a gambling problem and the sport told him to retire or else. NBA did not want a pete rose type scandal.
Yup. It’s only rule in North American sports with a lifetime for 1st offense. MLB was scarer. Everybody was. Up until 10 years ago or so the NFL didn’t allow Vegas to advertise during. NBC couldn’t advertise their show Vegas during games. Obviously the sea has changed a lot. But it’s still the big rule. Posted next to phone he used to place some of his bets. No sympathy.
MLB even sanctioned Willie Mays for being a goodwill ambassador for a casino.
I’m not saying he wasn’t all those things and that he wasn’t wrong. I am stating what those involved determined the investigations said.
There’s no way to determine that. There’s too many ways to bet and too many decisions a manager makes. There’s no possible way to his player and strategy decisions weren’t effected by a bet and therefore effected the game.
And of course in the end it also doesn’t matter. The rule says bet on games you’re involved in you get a lifetime ban. Effecting the game isn’t in the rule.
I didn’t know that. But not surprised they freaked.
It’s fine if a guy has low power numbers because he was a leadoff hitter and contact hitter who put the ball in play. But his career batting average ranks #179 and his OBP is #229 of all time. These are not the kind of numbers of an “all-time great” with mediocre power stats.
Nope, but if you live around Cincinnati and are a poor suffering Reds fan living in the past, you’ve grown accustomed to seeing him a dozen or so times a year in the media. Rose was my favorite player or favorite retired player for sixty years.
Yes, indeed, I will miss Pete.
He’s the freaking Hit King dude, give it up already. So you don’t like him, I get it!
Many many MLB players of his era will disagree with you no doubt.
What people miss about Pete is that he was the spark that lit the Reds flame for years. He set the table so many time for Morgan, Bench and Pérez. There wasn’t the Big Red Machine without Pete Rose. He was one of a kind and anyone who watched his career like I did would never say a bad thing about his game, because his game was A+ every damned day. He willed his way to win. He was the Reds Donald Trump, he didn’t take shit from no one, he was a homer, he loved his hometown and he gave people what they wanted to see every night without fail, and he busted his balls along with yours. There will never be another like him sadly.
83 is a good number... I’d take it now, if offered.
As an Astros fan, I never liked the Reds. But, I loved watching Pete play. He LOVED the game... probably more than any other.
I’m with ya
NO!! Not Linda!
100% concur.
If you owed your bookie money, you'd play that hard too.
A buddy of mine was a close friend of Pete Rose. (Brant Alyea died in February)
He said that Pete would bet on anything to everything.
Pete’s stats were always deserving to be elected to the HOF but he did break a rule that every ball player is aware of. “DON’T BET ON BASEBALL!”
Sadly, he will. not be in the Hall.
👍
I had a picture of him for years. He wanted to hurry after ballgames and didn’t really want to be delayed by a bunch of kids so he would get in early and sign a bunch of headshots. I got one from him outside Crosley Field (which was a great ballpark.)
I was always a Pete Rose fan. I would love every ballplayer to play the game the way Pete did. Off the field was a different thing. But Pete Rose was an essential part of some of the greatest teams in history. The Big Red Machine (especially the 1976 version) has to rank among the greatest teams of all time.
Should he be in the Hall of Fame? Well, there is the character thing, but a number of less than stellar characters are in teh Hall of Fame.
RIP Pete, and condolences to your family and friends.
Now put him in the Hall, where he belongs!
