California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill this week to ban one-pound, single-use propane cylinders, meaning that only more expensive reusable cylinders will be available in the state.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported:
Disposable propane canisters like the dark green ones used with camping stoves will soon be phased out in California, after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Sunday requiring all one-pound cylinders sold in the state to be reusable or refillable starting in 2028.
…
Between 4 million and 7 million of the single-use cylinders are sold in California each year, according to an estimate from the California Product Stewardship Council, a nonprofit local government coalition that sponsored the bill.
…
In 2022, Newsom vetoed a near-identical bill, SB 1256. In his veto letter, Newsom raised concerns about prohibiting sales of disposable cylinders “without a plan for collection and refill infrastructure.” The governor also urged the legislature to consider “market-based solutions” over an outright ban.

Do those 1 pound single use canisters have a relief valve? I don’t think they can be refilled. Though I suppose a refillable design can be marketed. I can’t imagine trying to refill 1 pound at the truck stop. Thus my post above was only partially in jest. Campers will have to refill or just rent and return the cans. More costly.
Maybe more campers will make fires to cook. In California not the best idea. Unintended consequences?
Buy em in Reno .
BUMP
Nobody will stock up on propane tanks in OR, NV, AZ, or MX.
The green disposable Coleman cylinders are reusable. You can buy a fitting on Amazon that allows you to refill them from the 20 lb. tank you use with a gas grill. I camp a lot and this has saved me a bunch of money.
That is correct. EVERY propane cylinder is to ONLY be filled to 80%. To do otherwise is foolish and I'm not going to write an essay to explain why. Listen for a change. If you buy an adapter to refill the 1lb tanks, make sure by weight you only fill them to 80% capacity (amount of the weight of propane [4lbs per gallon] + the tare weight [empty weight] of the bottle.
A 20# propane tank (5 gal.) will hold about 20 lbs of propane + the weight of the bottle (usually about 18lbs) thus making the total weight 38lbs. on the scale. So, a lb. bottle of propane should weigh about 13 ozs. + whatever the empty bottle weighs, no more. Also, make sure there are no leaks by spraying with soapy water. If any flammable natural gas leaks into an enclosed area and then is ignited, the explosionn will be military grade.
I see a market for single-use 15 oz. propane cylinders.
I already refill mine when needed.
I hate to bring this news to gov goodhair but those 1lb cylinders are refillable.
You can’t build a new home with a real fireplace. Been that way for many years. Then there is the no burn nights where if you do have a real fireplace you have to check with the state website to see if you can have a fire. Forget that the whole state is on fire. FGN
Unless you're free to recycle the things, what do you do with them ?
Most butane cigarette lighters are refillable, why not 1 lb cylinders ?
We and our next door neighbors both cook our meat on electric grills or wood. We exchange the lovely smells and samples, and we like it.
Nothing too small to screw up
...interesting.... literally bumped into a middle-aged couple at a local restaurant a few days back....moving to Central Texas from The Peoples’ Democratic Republic of California....life-long Californians but just can’t take it any longer...already sold their house in CA and already bought a house here in Texas....welcome to The Lone Star State!!
If it is fun and convenient, some liberal somewhere is enraged and will stomp it out
I figured it out in 1979.
I was born and raised in California.
after a stint in the military and came back,
I could see the damage these east coast thinking Democrats were doing to the state.
The problem is all that is left in California is those kinds of Democrats.
All the smart people got out!
My wife will be happy to hear that. Not sure I can accommodate her though.
Smores only allowed if they use WHITE chocolate.
I have always refilled my one-use 1lb propane camping canisters. There is an inexpensive transfer valve device to connect to a 20lb tanks and by gravity inverting, the liquid propane transfers under pressure. Eventually the tank valve begins leaking and needs disposal but I get many re-uses before that. Do others do this too?
