California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill this week to ban one-pound, single-use propane cylinders, meaning that only more expensive reusable cylinders will be available in the state.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported:
Disposable propane canisters like the dark green ones used with camping stoves will soon be phased out in California, after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Sunday requiring all one-pound cylinders sold in the state to be reusable or refillable starting in 2028.
…
Between 4 million and 7 million of the single-use cylinders are sold in California each year, according to an estimate from the California Product Stewardship Council, a nonprofit local government coalition that sponsored the bill.
…
In 2022, Newsom vetoed a near-identical bill, SB 1256. In his veto letter, Newsom raised concerns about prohibiting sales of disposable cylinders “without a plan for collection and refill infrastructure.” The governor also urged the legislature to consider “market-based solutions” over an outright ban.

Does anyone want to live in California?
Next thing he will ban Smores and camp fires.
People who use 1 lb. cylinders a LOT will come out ahead. Everybody else gets hosed.
Are cylinders made for propane torches banned, too? (They are actually interchangeable - I almost always use the “camping” cannisters with my torch, as they are usually cheaper, easier to set upright without toppling over, etc...)
What’s next? Banning S’mores and “selfies”? Newsom is an original brand Azho. Cauliphonyans are self-hating, masochists.
Natural gas is next. Nice clean burning gas energy infrastructure you have there...would be a shame if...
take them and toss them on the lawn of the governors house.
BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN....BAN...........
Kommie wants this for all of America. The gummit will tell you what to buy and when.
“..He is on a roll of stupid...”
Looks like he’s trying to compete with heels-up on who’s the more stupid.
And to think the communists are considering on running this moronic turd for POTUS on the next go-around....spit.
Sounds like people will be refilling the one pound cylinders that they already have.
But BE CAREFUL - propane expands when heated and will blow out the cylinders if no room for expansion remains. Best to have a precision scale and make sure to never exceed its the rating of the cylinder.
C’mon San Andreas Fault...do your thing!
Should be a boon for the propane and propane accessories industry
The cost of camping /entering ANY Calif park is outrageous now.
This will not help.
Used to be a big equine event at Malibu State Park.
Price of camping overnight & other fees got so bad that event is no longer held.
Could easily draw over 100 riders.
The unintended consequences will be fun. There is only one manufacturer of refillable 1# tanks. They are only filled with a large 20# tank and a refill kit. So now everyone will have large propane cylinders sitting around their homes no apartments to fill these with gas leaking and venting everywhere. Boom.
But we all know the real reason. It is to ban outdoor grilling. Liberals vegan green haired losers hate the smell of grilled meat and of course the environazis hate it because muh global warming.
I use refillable cans but that’s because I go through them so much and buy propane in bulk for my off grid set up, But Bob apartment dweller, who likes to grill on weekends is screwed.
3.5 more years for us and we’re gone. We live on the central coast, born and raised and will miss the beauty and not much else.
I’m wondering if Newsom will ever ban single-use hair gel products.
I set up our propane tank to refill our own small bottles.
