A London rabbi charged with performing an illegal circumcision on a baby boy in Dublin has been granted bail and has been allowed to return to the UK pending trial after a judge ruled that he was not a flight risk.

The old testament gives Divine authority to Rabbis to perform circumcision.
But the the laws of man interfere.
We clearly have no skin in this game ( pardon the pun).

In B.B. King’s “Blues All Around Me” he describes having it done at around 50 years old. The chapter in question is (as I remember) “Circumcision is nothing to laugh about.”

I have no hatred to throw but having worked for 20+ years in health care I can see where formal medical training should be required for such a procedure.
Perhaps a system could be set up where a genuine surgeon performs the actual cutting while the Rabbi,standing right next to the surgeon,recites the prayers that are part of the ceremony.
As for criminally charging the Rabbi I'm not at all sure I'd support that.

The evidence is circumstantial.

I guess ideally the state would have no input. But, then again, marriages have to be conducted by licensed pastors.
The problem is injury and infection, and there have been several cases where the injury or infection was serious.
Plus the poor kid has no say in any of it.
I do know that OBs and pediatricians get pretty good at it over time...why not have the Rabbi officiate when this is done.
Just avoid injuring the baby.

I believe that Jewish Mohels have been doing circumcisions for years. “ A mohel is a Jewish man trained in the practice of brit milah, the “covenant of male circumcision.” I hired one when my son was delivered by a midwife rather than in the hospital. He came on the 8th day, and we are Christian who decided that we wanted it done.
