The last remaining Denny’s in San Francisco closed its doors this month because customers would frequently leave without paying their bill in the crime-plagued city, according to the restaurant’s owner.
Chris Haque shuttered the 24-hour diner at 816 Mission St. near the Union Square section on Aug. 1 after 25 years.
“We’re the only store left, and we operated until the last day that we could,” Haque told SFGATE. “The cost of doing business is tremendous. There’s vandalism, and people come and eat and walk away, and there’s no one to stop them.”
Haque also lamented the fact that a key source of revenue — business conventions — had dried up in recent years due to the tech industry shifting to hybrid work during the pandemic.

All places to get decent hash browns. Although my favorite its the Hangar Cafe at the Chandler Airport. If you ask, they will put grilled onions on top of your hash browns.
Before I decide if I should feel sorry for him, I’d like to know who he voted for.
So since this will be a Denny’s food desert, the city will pay for luxury limo service for any homeless or financially challenged street person to go to and from the nearest Denny’s in another region. No gratuities necessary. Diners will be able to use prepaid Master Cards from the city taxpayers.
Talk about a Grand Slam.☕🥞🧇🥓🥓🍳🥘
The two Denny’s near me closed about 6 years ago and now the big pet supply place next door closed up a month ago. All the local Rite Aids are closing this week or so.
Shift of the auto plant near here was just cut off.
But poll says the residents here are even more rabid about their goddess Queen Kamala The First.
On the well done History series American Godfathers there is one with the interviewed police official recalling that over one million people moved out of New York City and left lower tax revenues and more abandoned buildings all over which made organized crime greatly increase. NYC went bankrupt and begged for more tax cash from the state and country.
Showed long rows of empty broken window former businesses and restaurants. Late 1970s or 80s.
Maybe Kamala can fix that new trend this time on “day one.”
It’s funny how traveling is more popular now than ever. Especially with all the DINKs with no children, who have lots of time and money on their hands.
It’s a big status symbol. “I’ve been here, I’ve been there, I’ve been everywhere. Next year I’ll have to figure out a new place to go that I haven’t been yet”.
Meanwhile, practically any place that you can think of to travel to was much more interesting and vibrant 50 years ago.
I was in Salzburg Austria in 1971 when I was 9 years old. I still remember tons of people coming out of the classical music halls at night and streaming into the dessert cafes. Everybody all dressed up, eating cake and looking at their programs from the night’s performance.
It was 1971, but it could have been 1931 or 1881. Now everywhere you go you just see people staring at their phones. Most of them born long after 1971.
Ain’t Globalism grand?
Love fun facts. 1964.
So when the last GOP mayor was there the hit songs on the radio were Can’t Buy Me Love, She Loves You by the Beatles,
The House of the Rising Sun by the Animals and Hello, Dolly by Louis Armstrong.
A long time ago.
These cities have been dying since the 1950s, certainly beyond recovery in the 1960s. What has been going on since then is a combination of willful ignorance, mau-mauing, raiding the carcass, burning the furniture for firewood, propaganda, marketing, and a con game.
The migration of drug addicts and misfits to the "Summer of Love" in 1967 in San Francisco was made possible because so many companies had already left and so many residents had already departed the city for the suburbs.
Tom Wolfe published 'Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers' in 1970.
The selection of the Democrat Party mayor in 1964 was the warning sign that the San Francisco was doomed. The unbroken list of Democrat mayors since then is just like a line of cracked sidewalk blocks.
George Christopher was a liberal Republican, but he was light years better than any of his successors.
Finely-chopped grilled onion, red and green pepper on hash browns - add butter - oh yea
A little Red Devil or Tabasco and a splash of ketchup
Now America’s Test Kitchen (for whatever that is worth) says to cook the hash browns or fried potatoes first
Cook the onions and peppers separately and then combine them when the cooking is complete - I’m guessing the starch in the potatoes can neutralze some of the flavors if combined too early

You, sir, are 110% right. I’m in San Francisco and am something of a student of the history of the city. A century ago, for example, the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco was a very chic, upscale area. The grand old
Victorian homes in the upper Haight were occupied by the likes of ambassadors and physicians and surgeons at nearby UC hospital. But the large apartment buildings and multifamily homes in the lower Haight were more middle class, home to teachers, longshoremen, factory workers etc. Already by the ‘50s, you had the Port of San Francisco losing out to ports in Oakland and Long Beach. The availability of more spacious homes in the suburbs led to flight of middle class families from apartments and flats in neighborhoods like the Haight. That exodus led to super-cheap rents in the Haight which attracted the hippies.
the food, service, gas and convenience deserts of Urban Cities will become the norm. It’s because the people live around them think they are owed something.
First pay… Then food…
America’s Diner cannot operate where there is no America. How very sad.
Democrats are the freeloaders of the U.S.
The Democratic Party supports illegal immigrants and deadbeats.
Plus who in the world would make reservations to eat at Denny’s?
If rock concerts or movies or even McDonald’s did the same thing as Denny’s, they’d have the same problem. But they do not, instead you PAY FIRST, then get your food. As far as tips go, just build it into the price, like the rest of the world does.
Maybe if they took ribs, bananas, and watermelon off the menu this wouldnt happen.
I mean LA in general. I used to walk all over, yes I avoided some areas, but now I wouldn’t. Not worth taking any chances.
