Nuclear plant fire: Ukraine and Russia trade blame

Aug 12 (Reuters) - Russia and Ukraine accused each other of starting a fire at the dormant Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine on Sunday, but both sides reported no sign of elevated radiation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear watchdog said its staff had seen thick, dark smoke coming from the northern part of the vast six-reactor plant in southern Ukraine, currently in "cold shutdown", after multiple blasts.

"These reckless attacks endanger nuclear safety at the plant and increase the risk of a nuclear accident. They must stop now," IAEA chief Rafael Grossi warned in a separate statement, without attributing blame.

The fire comes less than a week after Ukraine's forces launched their largest incursion into Russian territory since the war started in 2022.

Interfax news agency quoted Alexei Likhachev, head of the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, as saying the fire had burned for about three hours and caused "very serious damage" to the cooling towers.

I don’t know why Russia would blow up its own pipeline.
And I don’t know why Russia would set fire to its own nuclear power plant.

But these are things I’m told I should believe.

Well the pipeline doesn’t fit, but the power plant could be the ‘scorched earth’ strategy, which is basically to destroy potentially useful assets or materials when you retreat or relinquish ground.

Ask yourself with everything you have heard abut Russia and know about Russia if that makes any sense at all?!

Your take is the exact opposite of what is actually happening on the ground.

This was plan B. If they couldn’t get control of the Kursk nuke plant in their ill-fated desperate incursion they would attack the Zap nuke plant again and blame Russia, once again.

The mystery in my mind concerns a pipe line traversing Ukraine from Russia to Europe and said to be transporting Russian Gas.

Why does Ukraine permit such gas transport?

Does the pipeline actually still exist?

Because the EU needs Russia NG and energy just to survive.

The Russians are downwind from the plant. I seriously doubt they would intentionally risk irradiating themselves.

Russia stores ammo in this NPP so I give the blame to them.

For the money, just like all thieves and pirates.

This is a good video from Task and Purpose about this topic and the war in general. It is very balanced.
