‘Furious battles are underway’: Kursk residents call on Putin for help after Ukrainian incursion

Ukrainian forces are pushing further into the Kursk region of Russia, in a cross-border incursion that surprised even American officials, multiple US and Ukrainian officials tell CNN.

Ukrainian forces are comprised of a mix of Ukrainian regular and special operations units, unlike previous Ukrainian operations inside Russia that often involved undercover units and local sympathizers.

The intention, say US and Ukrainian officials, is multifaceted, in part to disrupt and demoralize Russian forces and in part to divert Russian forces away from other parts of the eastern front.

Russia claimed on Thursday to have halted a Ukrainian incursion into its territory, but later said that some battles are ongoing in the Kursk region. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, units of the “North” group of its forces, together with the Russian Federal Security Service, the FSB, “continue to destroy Ukrainian armed forces formations in the Sudzhensky and Korenevsky districts of the Kursk region, which are directly adjacent to the Russian-Ukrainian border.” CNN cannot independently verify these claims.

Kursk residents, who live in the Sudzhansky District, recorded a video address to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday asking for his help, saying he has been misinformed about the situation on the ground and the Russian Defense Ministry’s statements about things being under control are untrue.

The address was published on a local Telegram channel that is dedicated to covering the latest news out of the town of Sudzha in Kursk region, which has been under Ukrainian attack for several days.

“These lies enable the local residents to die. The Chief of the General staff recently told you that the situation is under control, but today huge furious battles are underway in the Sudzhansky and Korenevsky districts,” one of the residents said.

“Sudzha was attacked, turned into ruins in hours."

   Ukraine certainly has no aircraft carriers or destroyers.
   But they do have a number of smaller ships & boats, including:

   1. 33 Patrol boats from 10 to 150 tons
   2. 3 Landing craft from 50 to 1,200 tons
   3. 3 Mine Warfare from 600 to 2,100 tons
   4. 38 Supply & misc. from from 50 to 3,200 tons
   5. 91 RIBs around 3 tons
   6. 16 ROVs, surface and submersible

      184 naval craft of all types

      US Perry class Frigates offered to Ukraine:

      New ships in process or construction:

   7. 6 Frigates
   8. 10 Corvettes
   9. 20 Patrol boats
   10. 2 Mine Warfare
   11. dozens of ROVs
   12. hundreds of drones

       =38 ships plus unknown numbers of ROVs and drones.

2. "it has no operational air force, no operational air defese outside of Kiev..."

   Ukraine's air force consists of:

   1. 112 Old Soviet MIGs and SUs
   2. 40 Old Soviet helicopters
   3. 3 Antonov transports
   4. 10 US F-16s

      =165 Ukraine air force aircraft

   Ukraine's air defenses consist of:
   1. 273 Old Soviet SAM sites
   2. 6 German SAM sites
   3. 14 US SAM sites
   4. 3 Italian SAM sites

      =296 total Ukraine SAM facilities.

3. "...and its trops are being slaughtered."

   According to the estimates we have:

   • 2023 Russian losses averaged three to every one Ukrainian.

   • 2024 Russian losses have averaged six to every one Ukrainian.

   • As of today, total Russian military casualties are nearly 600,000.

   Such numbers reflect Russian "Meat Wave" assaults with Ukrainians defending from fortified positions and slowly giving up ground.
   So, Russians are literally slaughtering themselves -- I'd call that "Ukraine assisted suicide" or Russian "suicide by Uke".

woodpusher: "On a hopeful note Ukraine has a few F-16s parked as far away as possible from Russia, near Odesa.
And Lindsay Graham announced that Ukraine is looking for former F-16 pilots to fly the planes."

US F-16s from Denmark and the Netherlands are still an unknown factor.
It seems highly unlikely that a small number could have a major effect, so we can only wait and see...

It's true that for the past year Ukraine has been giving up ground at the rate of roughly one square mile per day and a cost to Russians of 1,000 casualties plus over 100 Russian vehicles lost per day.
At the current rate, it will take Russians over 10 years and 3.6 million casualties, just to take the rest of Dontesk, much less all of Ukraine!

Rather they are stuck there, running arond like cockroaches, trying to avoid the exterminator."

The fog of war over Kursk is still too thick to know what's really going on there, however, Ukrainians say they now occupy roughly 400 square miles, which is equivalent to the total territory of Ukraine taken by Russians in the past year, at a cost to Russians of over 200,000 casualties.
