Local police encountered attempted-assassin Thomas Crooks just moments before he tried to kill former president Donald Trump — but failed to stop the gunman despite the clear threat, according to a report.
After rallygoers spotted Crooks on the roof of a manufacturing plant just 130 yards from the stage where Trump was speaking just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, police were notified and one officer climbed a ladder to investigate, law enforcement officials said on the condition of anonymity.
There the officer encountered Crooks, who pointed his AR-style rifle at them.
The officer then backed down the ladder, and Crooks immediately took aim and loosed eight shots at the former president – grazing him in the ear, killing one bystander in the rally crowd, and gravely wounding two others.

Are the local PD or the USSS now hiring the former Cowards of Broward and/or The Eunuchs of Uvalde?
So local cops, were engaged, Secret Service was watching and aware. And they LET TRUMP STAY ON STAGE that entire minute.
shades of the The Parallax View ?
Especially if they are males who dress up like women.
> If the officer felt it too dangerous to engage the shooter, he/she should have fired a round into the ground to get the SS attention. <
Excellent comment. But there is a downside to your way of thinking. You obviously have too much common sense to get a job with the government.
Well, it appears the USSS refrained from neutralizing the threat prior to the shots at the President. That speaks volumes IMHO.
This isn’t Uvalde and a worthless comparison.
Watch daily YouTube police body cam videos and you’ll feel differently. There are literally THOUSANDS on YouTube on what these folks go through every day. There are bad seeds in every profession and police are not immune. It’s rather easy to mash fingers across a keyboard and not walk in their shoes where there’s a target on their backs each day. Quarterbacking is easy from the eyes of cop haters.
Well, for what it's worth, the Daily Mail has the story in addition to the New York Post.
Surprising the number of people who still refuse to accept that most cops are complete and utter cowards. This story may well be inaccurate. But to discount it outright simply because one prefers not to hear what's being reported is pretty telling.
Time to join the world that is instead of the world you like to imagine exists.
Right.
Thats why, when investigating ‘theres a man with a rifle on the roof’ you first:
1) unload your weapon and eject the chambered round.
2) Only when safe to do so, climb the ladder to get up there very carefully.
3) Without becoming unstable, load your firearm one again.
4) While it is pointed in a safe direction quietly chamber a round.
5) Once you have reholstered or slung your weapon in a safe manner, look around to see if you can see any THEMs that seem to be unhappy.
6) If you encounter anyone unhappy, ask them if they would care to share their feelings and why they have that mean looking weapon of war.
7) Once they tell you what is wrong, call the shift Sergent for debriefing and further instructions.
This is much better than the old, dangerous procedure of:
1) sling you fn carbine and get your ass up there silently.
2) broach the roof break slowly while scanning
3) unsling your carbine silently and hold high ready
4) identify the target and kill it if it touches it fire control
This cannot be a true story. The officer would have alerted other officers and the SS.
“If this is true, that police officer needs to be charged with murder and attempted murder”
Idiotic. He responded to the report, climbed a ladder to the roof, when he popped up, the scrote pointed an AR at him from a position of advantage. SS was watching. Snipers were watching. They were all talking about it on the radio.
And they left Trump put on stage.
I know you are a superman, but there are situations where you are in a bad spot and pressing forward is suicide. At the top of a ladder and finding a man aiming a rifle at you is one of those times.
Had the cop not climbed that ladder, the scrote coulda settled down with well aimed rounds. As it was he rushed and started shooting.
The cop probably saved Trump.
I suppose he has an unfortunate 'accident' scheduled for when he's on his way to the witness stand.
Why did supposed “officer” not notify SS to protect Trump. Were the officers planning to arrest the assassin for roof trespassing? B.s. information, not credible.
Probably at the top of the ladder and came face to face with the rifle armed nut who -heard- him climbing an aluminum ladder leaned against a steel building. No good way to get up there silently, and in a hurry, and get the drop on the bad guy. Sometimes all you get is a bad deal and you do your best.
And at the very moment EVERYONE there knew and they left Trump onstage.
climbing ladder with weapon in hand with round chambered can be done, but is not ideal. Much easier to send alarm to the SS to protect Trump, presuming they were inclined to do that.
You’re right Jar, in that policing these days is very difficult. We can thank the liberals for that.
But here’s the thing. Free Republic is a conservative, law-and-order site. This should be an overwhelming, ‘Back the Blue’ place. But it’s not. Something is wrong. Something has changed. And I don’t think it’s the FReepers.
I don’t know what the solution is, absent sweeping away all those liberal policies. But I do know bad times are ahead. Good people and the police must all be on the same page. That’s not the case now.
It is understandable that an officer would duck when someone turns a gun on them.
The SS had hours to secure the rooftop 140 yards from the podium.
Have you ever climbed a ladder while a guy with a gun is on the roof waiting for you to poke your head up over the eave?
Have you ever even cleaned a gutter?
