Trump’s Subtle Shift in His V.P. Calculations
The New York Times ^ | July 12, 2024, 12:47 p.m. ET | Michael C. Bender

Donald J. Trump appears to be giving more weight to political calculations in selecting a running mate, by picking someone who “helps you get elected.”

For much of the past year, Donald J. Trump has described his perfect running mate as someone who could easily take over as commander in chief if needed and help him draw a contrast to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“It’s got to be somebody that can be a good president, which Biden doesn’t have,” Mr. Trump said in April during an interview with Hugh Hewitt, a conservative political commentator.

But now, as the curtain closes on his theatrical selection process, his public statements suggest that his thinking has shifted and he’s giving more weight to political calculations.

Mr. Trump said on Monday his top priority remained someone qualified to be president and then quickly added a second criterion: “Somebody that helps you get elected.”

His new focus on someone who can help him win may stem from indecision over his choice, some allies said. Mr. Trump has said he plans to announce his running mate before or during the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday. Some aides have wondered whether he will announce his pick before then, in time for a campaign rally on Saturday in western Pennsylvania.

Two people who spoke separately with Mr. Trump this week said they had the impression he was still undecided. As of Friday morning, he had not called any of his top three contenders to offer them the position, according to two advisers who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Supposedly Nixon felt he need Agnew to appeal to conservatives. I’m not sure if that worked, it was before my time.

“theatrical selection process”

the only theatricalness about the selection “process” is the continuous, ridiculous, clickbait nonsense the propaganda media generates out of thin air ...

[hint: there is no PROCESS ... the selection is all inside of Trump’s noggin and he ain’t telling a single soul until the official announcement is made]

Let’s do the math....

If he wants someone to help him win - that rules out states he already has locked: FL, OH, ND, TX, AR, SC, SD

Which leaves who?

Youngkin - VA
Gabbard - HI
Stefanik - NY
Mace - NC

Of these, I think he wins NC anyway, so Mace is out. Take your pick from the other three.

Between health issues, party pressures and Deep State assassination risk Biden has a lot less than a 90% chance of making it all the way to November.

Himes of the Gang of Eight wants him gone.

That is like waving a red flag in front of a CIA bull—open season on Biden.

In 1972, Nixon won 49 states, losing only Massachusetts and D.C.

JFK’s pick of LBJ for sure helped Kennedy secure the win.

Being from a state does not guarantee getting a state’s electoral votes.

In this particular election the VP nominee is both critically important and absolutely irrelevant.

It is critically important because it gives a leg up on GOP leadership in 2028 and beyond.

It is absolutely irrelevant because President Trump is the elephant in the room for voters—vastly overshadows whoever the VP is.

On that basis I would focus on the future leadership issue and ignore state location.

“JFK’s pick of LBJ for sure helped Kennedy secure the win.”

Yup—also got JFK assassinated. LBJ was neck deep in the conspiracy.

Sometime you get more than you bargained for...lol.

1968 was a very close election. Perhaps Agnew helped get the Nixon Agnew ticket over the top that year.

Youngkin flips VA and runs Maryland close. Bidendropov would have to retain the Blue Wall AND AZ to even have a shot.

Case closed.

Nothing is guaranteed - especially Stefanik getting NY. Hell, DJT is from there and it won’t help. I think Gabbard will be the best choice and tells a good uniting story. 2028 though is a wide-open contest and the VP will have to earn their way, to enter the contest much like 2016 with so many candidates. By then we’d see DeSantis, Trump Jr maybe, Cotton, Cruz maybe, Rubio, etc. Maybe even KrispyKreme again... Have to admit, I like our bench way better than theirs. When he chooses his VP, we will see wringing of hands, gnashing of teeth on here, then after a week or so, we all move on and support DJT no matter what because there is no other option. Staying home is not an option.

You’re right - FR needs an edit button... LOL. I love Carson. Wanted him in 2016 to be honest. I had to come around on DJT during the primaries.

What about all the Freepers who have said they won’t vote for Trump if he picks the “wrong” running mate? Are all these people.blowing hot air and didn’t really mean it?
