Donald J. Trump appears to be giving more weight to political calculations in selecting a running mate, by picking someone who “helps you get elected.”
For much of the past year, Donald J. Trump has described his perfect running mate as someone who could easily take over as commander in chief if needed and help him draw a contrast to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“It’s got to be somebody that can be a good president, which Biden doesn’t have,” Mr. Trump said in April during an interview with Hugh Hewitt, a conservative political commentator.
But now, as the curtain closes on his theatrical selection process, his public statements suggest that his thinking has shifted and he’s giving more weight to political calculations.
Mr. Trump said on Monday his top priority remained someone qualified to be president and then quickly added a second criterion: “Somebody that helps you get elected.”
His new focus on someone who can help him win may stem from indecision over his choice, some allies said. Mr. Trump has said he plans to announce his running mate before or during the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday. Some aides have wondered whether he will announce his pick before then, in time for a campaign rally on Saturday in western Pennsylvania.
Two people who spoke separately with Mr. Trump this week said they had the impression he was still undecided. As of Friday morning, he had not called any of his top three contenders to offer them the position, according to two advisers who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

They could change even at the last minute.

I believe everything the New York Times says because they never lie. They told me so.

Trump doesnt know or we would know by now, and thats ok. Trump is being Trump, soaking up all the publicity.
The media never lie.
Why would anyone want to read anything about DJT in the NYT? They will never print anything positive, and if it’s derogatory, it’s probably not true. It’s the last place I would seek information about Trump.

I think Trump decided on his VP about 6-7 months ago and I think it will be VIVEK, the ONLY guy who has THE plan to continue and EXPAND MAGA past 2028 after Trump is gone.
Every few days, the media has a new person that they are sure will be Trump’s VP. Their information is based upon information from someone “familiar with his thinking”.
What does that tell us? It tells us that they are making stuff up and trying to form opinion rather than report any news. The NYT’s and WaPo have no inside person that is aware of Trump’s thinking on anything, much less his VP selection.
Rove is pushing for Doug Burgum. A DC GOPe insider. I don’t think Trump is that foolish, but Burgum should be immediately stricken from any list.

True but a VP who can articulate MAGA in a different way could help Trump get elected because some people might be more open to the MAGA platform if it was not synonymous with Trump in their minds. Trump’s supporters are locked in- the right VP could bring in independent voters who might bite the bullet for for years if the liked who is up next.
I think we do. 90% Biden, 9 Kamala Harris, 1% someone else.
McCain didn’t win, but he would have done significantly worse without his VP.

I would hope that President Trump is trying to pre-plug some leaks.
How do you do that?
Tell Aide #1 that Person X is your VP choice.
Tell Aide #2 that Person Y is your VP choice.
Tell Aide #3 that Person Z is your VP choice.
