Part of what brought Vance to the dance may be his undoing. Donors are scared of him.

In his rise from Donald Trump critic to viable contender to be the presumptive Republican nominee’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio has come so far. But he may fall just short thanks to some risk-averse GOP donors.

“Donors have really coalesced around Burgum and Rubio at this point,” a Republican strategist who has been in contact with donors for months over the Trump veepstakes told The Daily Beast. Vance, on the other hand, “hasn’t done anything meaningful” in the eyes of some of the more traditional Republican major donors. “He’s just gone on Fox.”

Screw the donors. Wtf have either Rubio or this guy Burghum ever done? I want someone who will put America first - I have no confidence in any one the donor class endorses.

I was wondering about that as I was reading the article, and your comment is helpful in that sometimes I distrust my intuition.

I read Vance’s “HillBilly Elegy” long before I knew him as a candidate for office. I was impressed with his writing style, and his grasp of that particular region of the country (I grew up in Western PA, and the culture is quite similar.

As to whether he would be a good vice president? I need to do some more thinking. I like several others, particularly Ben Carson, but not Marco or anyone else who could be controlled by the RINO bunch.

Burgum is a graduate of the Larry Craig Toetapper School of Dance, with white Uncle Eddie shoes and all.

And weren't Lawrence Welk and Doug Burgum grade school classmates?

Just say NO to Burgum. Totally the wrong vibe for this day and age. He looks like he belongs at the country club Thursday "businessman's luncheon" for local chamber of commerce members. The only thing Burghum adds is "meh".

I'm not a fan of J.D. Vance, but Vance has some bona fides that are hard to argue against. And more voters can relate to Vance than to Burgum. Vance pulled himself up to success by his own bootstraps breaking free of a crackhead hillbilly family.

Vance has always struck me as a manipulative phony.

That's not really a knock against him as a U.S. Senator (they are all phonies, to some degree), but it sure takes the wind out of his sails as a VP candidate for Donald Trump.

i am not a political expert (as anyone reading FR knows by now, smiles)

superficially, all three have some positive aspects and are a million times better than any of the visible D candidates (for either veep or potus)

what I couldn’t quite discern from the article is exactly who allegedly doesn’t like Vance and WHY (I could have failed to grasp things, admittedly)

Ohio being a “swing state” par excellence, with two big leftist-D cities but (unlike some other states dominated by same) many smaller cities and towns and rural areas that are still R

anyone who could pull Ohio securely into the R camp this election would also be likely to contribute to winning PA and Mi and ?

now then, I am not advocating for Vance since he’s relatively new to politics (a plus insofar as most voters). And I simply dont know a lot yet about him

I try to learn. Part of this learning process is to find out who doesn’t like him and why.

“coastal donors” isn’t much information, frankly.

“ there was a wide set of DeWine-Ryan voters who did not want J.D. Vance”

So, if Tulsi is off the board, then he’s my boy.

I'll just add that Sarah Huckabee would be my first choice.

#29: "Leave the senators where they are."

That is a very, very, very good point. Removing a senator is a losing proposition. Too damn risky for little or no gain.

The VP pick will not gain Trump any voters. No moderate is going to vote for the “evil” Trump because they think a moderate will be able to rein him in. The VP pick may lose him voters if he picks too centrist of a candidate and hard right voters decide not to show up.

The 2 biggest factors to consider are...

1.) Legacy - he should pick someone who can win in 2028 and cement any changes he is capable of making

2.) (and the biggest one) Insurance - he needs to pick someone so detestable to mainstream Republicans and other deepstaters that it wouldn’t be worth taking Trump out. This also brings into play fortitude. If they make a move on Trump and they don’t like his VP, they will pull a Spiro Agnew and take the VP out first. So, whoever he picks must be someone the deepstate doesn’t want and has enough fortitude to fight when they try taking him out.

My pick would be Ken Paxton but Vance may be good too.

DISCLAIMER: This post is ignoring the fact that elections aren’t real and the deepstate is just going to install whoever they want.

Which additional block of voters Vance brings in 2024? Much more important is a Trump win, not who will be the VP, who has little functional powers than presiding over the senate to break a deadlock.

If DeSantis is the VP, the Republicans would start impeachment hearings on day 1.

Swamp filth lobbying for other Swamp filth.

If you have heard of the selectee from politics, then that person is disqualified.

Choose from outside the Swamp. Flynn, Vivek, Musk (who might very well endure it knowing it makes him the top choice in 2028)

Not that Trump will pay me any attention but my picks would be: 1 - Tulsi Gabbard; 2 - Elise Stefanik; 3 - Pam Bondi, former AG of Florida.

Yep. Vance is exactly who I want....because he is exactly who the Establishment does not want. He has great populist instincts and appears to be a good candidate to be Trump’s successor. The fact that the Deep State would fear him at least as much as Trump, means Trump will be safe if he chooses Vance.
