I was wondering about that as I was reading the article, and your comment is helpful in that sometimes I distrust my intuition.
I read Vance’s “HillBilly Elegy” long before I knew him as a candidate for office. I was impressed with his writing style, and his grasp of that particular region of the country (I grew up in Western PA, and the culture is quite similar.
As to whether he would be a good vice president? I need to do some more thinking. I like several others, particularly Ben Carson, but not Marco or anyone else who could be controlled by the RINO bunch.

I recall when JDV was starting to get some notice in politics a few years ago, people who knew him let it be known that he did quite a bit of tapdancing around the truth in that book. Quite a bit of self- serving fiction.
I never read it. I didn’t know him. So I can’t say. Just the scuttlebutt I hear.
