I’m betting many of those 97 delegates had a huge number of DEM voters behind them. I’m sure they’re delighted to be able to support Trump, not that it matters at this point.

I believe it is common practice at uncontested conventions with a clear winner, for the also-rans to release their delegates in order to give the nominee a unanimous victory. I wouldn’t read too much into this.
