The New Republic has received massive backlash for using a cover image of Donald Trump as Hitler for a piece that argues America will be plunged into fascism if he wins the election.
We chose the cover image, based on a well-known 1932 Hitler campaign poster, for a precise reason: that anyone transported back to 1932 Germany could very, very easily have explained away Herr Hitler’s excesses and been persuaded that his critics were going overboard. After all, , he spent 1932 campaigning, negotiating, doing interviews—being a mostly normal politician. But he and his people vowed all along that they would use the tools of democracy to destroy it, and it was only after he was given power that Germany saw his movement’s full face.
Today, we at The New Republic think we can spend this election year in one of two ways. We can spend it debating whether Trump meets the nine or 17 points that define fascism. Or we can spend it saying, “He’s damn close enough, and we’d better fight.”
We unreservedly choose the latter course. And so we have assembled herein some of our leading intellectual historians of fascism; a member of the fourth estate who learned firsthand what the Trump lash feels like; a leading expert on civil-military relations; a great Guatemalan American novelist with a deep understanding of immigrants’ lives; one of our most incisive cultural critics; and a man with all-too-real experience in living under a notorious authoritarian regime. The scenarios they describe are certainly grim. We dare you to say, after reading these pieces, that they are impossible.

The outlet claimed that they used the image to highlight the similarities between how Hitler used the “tools of democracy to destroy it.”
Basically, they’re arguing Trump is Hitler, a tired trope.
The backlash was swift.
Lmao. Any credibility you had just went out the door. What a clown publication. Retire. — uncle goose (@BusyGooseLLC) July 7, 2024
It’s the ‘anyone I don’t like is Hitler’ meme.

Projection much? Again.
So true! I prefer the party that stands on the side of those brave freedom fighters who protest outside of Jewish schools! No more Nazis! — Magills (@magills_) July 7, 2024
The fascist is already in the white house. Right now. You are his propagandists. We see you. — Menkui (@Cmplxe) July 7, 2024
Fascism:

We’re getting déjà vu.
“No, seriously, THIS time he’ll be Super Hitler. I swear!” — Carlos (@txiokatu) July 7, 2024
The propaganda is just recycled and no one buys it anymore.
Did trump institute fascism when he was president? I must have missed that, you morons. — Nicola luccha (@NLuccha) July 7, 2024
All it does is make Trump more popular.
The fact that he was already president once before kind of puts the damper on your thesis, doesn't it? — AmishDude (@TheAmishDude) July 7, 2024
It’s also just offensive.
You suck. Any attempts to pin the Hitler moniker on anyone is childish, fear mongering, and belittling to those who actually had to live, fight, and die during his time. — David K (@DKlindt70657) July 7, 2024
They’ve got nothing else.
This is what desperation looks like😂😂 — Spitfire (@DogRightGirl) July 7, 2024

Hitler didn’t “trigger massive inflation” though. The hyperinflation in Germany was 10-12 years before he took power.
For me the lack of pot bellies is a clue.
Good luck finding a random set of American middle aged males with none having a pot belly.
So freedom from BIG govt leftism is now considered Nazi-ism? What disgusting pigs they’ve turned into.
The magazine is now less serious than a comic book.
That and Hitler never won a single election. He used street muscle combined with a weak government to have Bismark appoint him. They avoided a civil war and started a world war.
These people are sick.
So in other words, Mike Godwin is now LITERALLY HITLER.
‘I keep asking leftists: “So what’s your problem with Hitler? He hated Jews and wanted to exterminate them. You advocate for people who hate Jews and want to exterminate them.”
Damn straight.
“That and Hitler never won a single election. He used street muscle combined with a weak government to have Bismark appoint him.”
Wasn’t Bismarck, it was Hindenburg. But you make a number of excellent points. Hitler never won an election. And I believe the Nazis did worse in 1932 than in 1930. So they just flipped the table and took power through their street mobs, that resulted in Hitler becoming chancellor and Hindenburg’s days were numbered.
"Kitler."
They’re just doing this to rev up their base...and because they know they can. Trump, in reality, was pretty weak against the left, and even the “fascist” justices he got in were the result of the work of Mitch O’Connell and allies. (And they proved not to be very “fascist” or conservative either.)
I don’t like Trump, but for reasonable motives and I know he’s anything but Hitler. But the press have discovered they can get away with saying anything they want about him, no matter how untrue or even improbable, and there is no downside to it for them. So they’re just doing the Big Brother government’s “2 minute hate” in print form.
Inside every liberal is a fascist trying to get out. Which Party wants to exterminate all the Jews in Israel?
“So they just flipped the table and took power through their street mobs, that resulted in Hitler becoming chancellor and Hindenburg’s days were numbered.”
They joined with the Communists to wreck the Weimar Republic. Both sides sponsored street brawls and joined in sponsoring strikes.
All cats can relate.
Indeed
The autocrats hate everything around them as well as themselves it’s why they are dangerous to everything.
Biden and party as well as their supporters are the poster of them they use Antifa and BLM and many other groups as their army for a lesson in obey or else and rake in millions form those just as crazy as they are.
MEDIA APPROVED
Hahahahaha!
Bkmk
These same bed wetters who compare Trump to Hitler failed their college world history courses and went into journalism for an easy degree.
