Trump’s New Running Mate Imperative
WSJ ^ | July 7, 2024 | Editorial Board

The need for stability and experience should eliminate the young MAGA-in-a-hurry types like Sen. J.D. Vance or Members of the House.

As the GOP convention nears, and voters focus on the election, the race remains closer than it should be given Mr. Biden’s infirmities. Swing voters still worry about Mr. Trump and the possibility of four more years of turmoil. The former President can help his campaign, and the country, by projecting stability and calm.

We know many readers will think this is impossible, and maybe it is. Yet he showed admirable restraint after the debate last week, letting Democrats implode, until his profane golf-cart outburst.

The opportunity is there to present a reassuring alternative if Mr. Trump wants to take it. And he has a timely opening to send that message with his vice presidential choice in the next week. Now leading in the polls, he doesn’t need an attack-dog VP or someone to rally his core voters. He needs a choice who shows mature judgment and has the ability to appeal to anxious and undecided voters.

Yeah, really. And the supposed “outburst” was from a private conversation.

One of the big difference in today’s selection of a Vice President is that Trump — this time — can choose whoever he wants. Pence was probably a compromise choice to please McConnell who held a lot of marbles back in 2016.

Today, Trump OWNS the Republican Party and the RINOs are a much smaller — but still potent fraction in the Senate especially.

I agree with those who say Trump needs to be pick up the MAGA flag and pick his VP as a likely successor.

I’m amazed at how many on our side pass off Pompeo as some deep state hack. Why? Because he was Director of the CIA? Yes, he was. Why, exactly?

https://www.businessinsider.com/pompeo-rebukes-trump-calls-for-leaders-not-claiming-victimhood-2022-11

Following the events of January 6, in which Trump stoked a mob to disrupt the counting of Electoral College votes in an effort to overturn the 2020 election, Pompeo was reportedly among the cabinet officials who contemplated removing the former president via the 25th amendment.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/10/us/politics/25th-amendment-trump-cabinet.html

Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state at the time, and Steven Mnuchin, then the Treasury secretary, discussed the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment, which would have required the vice president and the majority of the cabinet to agree that the president could no longer fulfill his duties to begin a complex process of removal from office.

Pft!

“Experience” in what, exactly? Swamponomics? Appeasement? Political compromise?

Exactly- cuz Trump aint fixing close to everything in 4 years. There will need to be a person equivalent to pass the batton to. Otherwise its just postponing the end for 4 years.

“Swing voters still worry about Mr. Trump and the possibility of four more years of turmoil.”

I would prefer four years of turmoil over four more years of Bidenism.

[WSJ] The need for stability and experience should eliminate the young MAGA-in-a-hurry types like Sen. J.D. Vance or Members of the House. They lack experience and wouldn’t be a reassuring contrast to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Almost anyone would present a reassuring contrast to word salad Kammy. Picture Kamala on the stage with Tulsi Gabbard. That would be a gross mismatch and I don't think Tulsi is even in the running. Tim Scott, J.D. Vance, Vivek Ramaswamy, Elise Stefanik—all would make a fine contrast to Kamala Harris. Anyone who can speak in coherent sentences would be a reassuring contrast.

I nominate Victor Davis Hanson, Thomas Sowell, or Mark Steyn.

Mark Steyn is Canadian.

At the convention he should announce that it makes no sense to pick a running mate before he knows who he’s running against.

RE: will be Tim Scott.

I absolutely agree. The drop from 90% black vote for the Dems can only happen it there is an answer to “I don’t like Biden but I hate Trump because he is a white racist like I seen on TV when Sharpton said it last night.”

Tim Scott would be a great choice.

If it’s Burgum or Vance “The Trump choice shows he is a white racist new Hitler.” Another white male. No good.
Can’t afford that.

I totally agree. We keep seats, and no more (Pence-like) back stabbers. Carson is the only candidate I completely trust to stay loyal.
