French leftists win most seats in elections, pollsters say. Lack of majority to create turmoil

PARIS (AP) — A coalition on the left that came together unexpectedly ahead of France’s snap elections won the most parliamentary seats in the vote, according to polling projections Sunday. The surprise projections put President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance in second and the far right in third.

The lack of majority for any single alliance plunged France into political and economic turmoil. Final results are not expected until late Sunday or early Monday in the highly volatile snap election, which was called just four weeks ago in a huge gamble for Macron.

The deeply unpopular president lost control of parliament, according to the projections. Marine Le Pen’s far right drastically increased the number of seats it holds in parliament but fell far short of expectations.

The snap legislative elections in this nuclear-armed nation and major economy will influence the war in Ukraine, global diplomacy and Europe’s economic stability.

France now faces the prospect of weeks of political machinations to determine who will be prime minister and lead the National Assembly. And Macron faces the prospect of leading the country alongside a prime minister opposed to most of his domestic policies.

The projections, if confirmed by official counts expected later Sunday or early Monday, plunge a pillar of the European Union and its second-largest economy into intense uncertainty, with no clarity about who might partner with President Emmanuel Macron as prime minister in governing France.

Thatcher was an aberration: historically the Tories were the party of “slower change” rather than an ideological party.

Macron dissolved parliament and called for snap legislative elections after the far right came out ahead of his centrist alliance in June elections for the European Parliament.

Leftist parties – including the hard-left France Unbowed, the Communists, the centre-left Socialists and the Greens – hastily agreed to form an alliance called the New Popular Front in the days after Macron’s shock decision.

Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party led the first round of voting with 33% followed by the New Popular Front with almost 28% and President Macron’s ruling coalition trailing at 20%.

Between the first and second rounds, more than 200 candidates from various parties who qualified for the run-off stepped aside to allow a better-placed rival to go head-to-head with the National Rally candidate in their constituencies, increasing the chances of defeating them.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said he would resign on Monday but will carry out his duties as long as required. It is France’s president who nominates the PM but the candidate must be approved by parliament and thus often hails from whatever party or coalition holds the most seats.

I wonder… since right leaning politicians are weak and stupid…did they do any thing to combat voter fraud? The left is stronger in Europe than in the US. So it stands to reason that they, with the help of the wef, can cheat, and do so more effectively. My guess like CONservatives here, they wasted everyone’s time and failed the people. Plus they are French, and the French have always been utter surrender monkey fools. One weekend of sculling riots and they collapse in fear

Thanks for posting, qam1.

Last week, the second largest Left party said ALL of its candidates who did not finish first or second in the Primary would drop out.

Sounds like that idea appealed to EVERY non-Right party.

Very discouraging.

Nothing will change in Europe - Mass Immigration - Radical Environmentalism - Government by Hard Left Bureaucrats - Daring Putin to go Nuclear.

Completely insane policies.

Something to keep in mind...

While France uses paper ballots to cast votes...

It uses electronic tabulators to count them.

The public will never know for sure who won what without an audit.

Thanks, Mewzilla.

Because I know almost nothing about French elections, I decided NOT to mention voter fraud.

USA elections?

Voter Fraud!

A coalition on the left ... and the far right in third.

Notice the difference in the description.

Election fraud should always be a concern (see my tagline).

However, some Freeper (I forget who) remarked awhile back that French elections are relatively fair. ID is required, etc.

He seemed to know more about the French election process than I do. So I decided not to offer an opinion on fraud one way or the other.

Hopefully, he (or she) will post something about it in the next day or two. That would be a very interesting read.

People make a big deal about the paper ballots.

But it’s not about who casts the votes anymore, is it...

It’s about who counts the votes.

Why would Trump need to “kick Putin’s butt”?

It makes way more sense to have Russia as a geopolitical ally and strategic partner than an enemy, especially given the way Europe is trending.
