Service Temporarily Disrupted Between New York and New Haven. ( Amtrak )
Amtrak ^ | July 06, 2024 | Amtrak

Posted on 07/06/2024 4:31:03 PM PDT by george76

On July 6, due to an ongoing electric power issue, Amtrak canceled service between Boston and New York City for the remainder of the day.

Amtrak is communicating directly with impacted customers about this service interruption and offering options for rebooking their travel plans. Amtrak apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the disruption. Our crews are working hard to correct the issues.

Something isn’t right (or disclosed) with this story. When there were power issues between NY Penn Station and Newark, it affected service on NJ Transit and Amtrak. Nearly all of the route between New Haven and New York (Amtrak’s route to Penn station diverges from the MNR New Haven line just south-southwest of New Rochelle) is shared with Metro-North, who is reporting no problems.

So either the problem is on the line (Hell Gate) from New Rochelle to Penn, or the problem is East of New Haven where only Amtrak and Shore Line East operate. Shore Line East isn’t reporting any delays or cancellations.

To further confuse everyone, the announcement on the Amtrak site says no service between New York and New Haven (it’s in red at the top of their home page). When you click on the link to get the details, it says that service between New York and Boston is suspended for the rest of the day.

I have the New London live feed on the TV. It shows a Northeast Regional heading to NYC at Old Saybrook.

As of 9 p.m. (ET), Amtrak service between Boston and New York City has been fully restored. The preliminary cause is a lightning strike that interrupted our power.

This evening, trains 65 (Boston to Newport News, Virginia) and 66 (Roanoke, Va. to Boston) are operating on time as scheduled this evening.
On Sunday, most trains will operate on schedule. Due to equipment locations at the time of the service disruption, trains 54, 142, 162, 150 and 157 are cancelled.
Amtrak is communicating directly with customers impacted by these adjustments and offering options for rebooking their travel plans. Amtrak apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the disruption.

Customers with reservations on affected trains will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day. Amtrak will waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling our reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.

It was raining in New London. If they took a lightning strike, I’ll give Amtrak the benefit of the doubt.
