Ukraine’s army retreats from positions as Russia gets closer to seizing strategically important town

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s army has retreated from a neighborhood in the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, a strategically important town in the eastern Donetsk region that has been reduced to rubble under a monthslong Russian assault, a military spokesperson said Thursday. Chasiv Yar is a short distance west of Bakhmut, which was captured by Russia last year after a bitter 10-month battle. For months, Russian forces have focused on capturing Chasiv Yar, a town which occupies an elevated location. Its fall would put nearby cities in jeopardy, compromise critical Ukrainian supply routes and bring Russia closer to its stated aim of seizing the entire Donetsk region. The Ukrainian army retreated from a northeastern neighborhood in the town, Nazar Voloshyn, the spokesperson for the Khortytsia ground forces formation, told The Associated Press in a written message Thursday.

JonPreston quoting: "Moreover, Ukrainian troops have recently retreated from Chasiv Yar, a strategically important town, whose hilltop position could help Russians to batter the key remaining Ukrainian-controlled cities in the Donetsk region, according to Luke Harding, correspondent for The Guardian."

So, let's talk about Chasiv Yar -- a prewar population of circa 12,000 now completely destroyed, about six miles due west of Bakhmut.

Bakhmut, May 2023:

There's no doubt that Chasiv Yar has some tactical importance, both for its elevated location and connections with important supply routes.

At Chashiv Yar the story is the same --
  1. Massive Russian casualties expended to conquer minimum square miles of territory, at Chashiv Yar since April 4.

  2. In Russian meat-wave assaults, the casualties' ratios can reach 10 Russians to one Ukrainian, and the overall average has increased from circa thee-to-one in 2023 to now six-to-one, according to Ukrainians.
Finally, it's worth noting that Russians have claimed to conquer Chasiv Yar now several times, when what they've actually taken was just its lower eastern suburb, not the hilltop center city.
So, for sure, the hilltop city is now reduced to rubble, but I doubt if Ukrainians will finally give it up without extracting maximum casualties from Russian invaders.

Bottom line: at the current rate, it will take Russia over 1,000 years to conquer all of Ukraine (233,000 square miles), and it will consume all of Russia's 140 million population.

Yeah, I don't think so...

So, let's talk about Chasiv Yar

My dear God, yes!

And may I add it's terrific to have you back in my loop, Bro.

I don't expect you to get writer's cramp posting back to me, but I'll need more from you than #102.

It's skimpy to say the least.

So let's talk..

JonPreston: "The fact that Trump spent most of his adult life outside of the Republican Party is why he is embraced by the nation."

The years 1999 to 2012 hardly constitute "most of his adult life", but your point is still somewhat valid -- he was a businessman, never a politician.

It's also worth remembering the Democrat party turned on Trump with a vengeance, once his Republican affiliations became well known in 2015.
I don't remember Republicans ever attacking him like that when Trump was a Democrat.

That would be his political life Bro, and the point is valid; the Republican Party then, and now, is a hollow structure, filled with men dressed in seersucker suits and tasseled shoes. Hardly Trump. Hardly the American middle.

That is exactly my understanding -- the lower "eastern suburb" which Russians have used to claim they've conquered all of Chasiv Yar.
They didn't, at least not yet.

In reality, we're talking about Russians taking fractions of a square mile at a Russian-Ukrainian casualty ratio of circa six-to-one.

Please, a link to the casualty ratio of six-to-one, or are you using Biden fuzzy math?

Do you still support Trump now that he has said pitins “peace plan” is trash?

Do you or is he mental as well

Thanks for laying out the “we have taken Berlin” level of hyperbole out of the usuals

Completely destroy a city, lose enormous amounts of men and material, bomb a few children’s hospitals for side fun, and thought you have only taken a fraction plant your flag and declare “second coming of Kursk “.

Only a Zeeper would agree that Biden is demented, and unfit to drive a car, yet qualified to cobble together NATO member nations for war in Ukraine.

Do you or is he mental as well

This makes no sense. Run it by some HS dropouts and see what they say.

Never said xiden did anything, of course he is not, others are doing it and I still partially agree with policy, already explained that, but even a “HS dropout “ can figure that out

"Thanks for correcting my hazy memory."

That wasn't hazy memory. That was deliberate disinformation. If you actually cared about providing true facts, you would have verified your info before throwing it out there. It's called credibility, and you obviously don't care about yours.

JonPreston: "Please, a link to the casualty ratio of six-to-one, or are you using Biden fuzzy math?"

Here is one report, dated July 1, 2024.

That report also mentions a Mediazona report of 64,000 Russian soldiers confirmed killed, but does not mention Mediazona's estimate, based on probate registries, of up to 140,000 Russian military deaths in the Ukraine war.

Given a normal three-to-one ratio -- three wounded, captured or missing to every one killed or died -- 140,000 Russian soldiers died corresponds to 560,000 total Russian casualties, which is almost exactly what Ukrainians have reported so far -- those numbers also approximated by UK estimates.
US estimates put the **minimum** Russian losses at about 1/3 less = ~350,000.

Ukraine's count of Russian casualties, so far in just 2024, is about 150,000 for the gains of, at most, 100 square miles of Ukrainian territory, or roughly 1,500 Russian casualties per square mile.

If Ukrainian casualties are running 1/6 the Russian numbers, it means about 25,000 so far in 2024, including roughly 6,000 killed.

In US equivalent terms, 6,000 Ukrainian deaths over six months of 2024 corresponds to roughly 120,000 annual US deaths, which is a lot:

  1. ~100,000 US drug overdose deaths per year
  2. ~50,000 US suicides per year
  3. ~50,000 US gun related deaths (murders, accidents, etc.) per year

Oh, for crying out loud -- you didn't read what I wrote, did you?
You're just blasting aways with nonsense because that's what you love to do, isn't it?

Turns out, if you'd pay attention, that even though my memory was a bit hazy, still, during the time-period of the possibly apocryphal story, Trump was a Democrat, a playboy and had financial troubles.

And we might want to take a moment to contemplate whether those three conditions are somewhat cause-and-effect -- Democrat, Playboy & Financial Troubles.

But you didn't pay any attention to any of that, did you?
You just blasted away with nonsense because that's who you are and what you do, isn't it?

an estimate of excess mortality among men

This in collaboration of the BBC?

No where in this report does it specifically mention Russian military deaths caused by action in Ukraine.

Do better, and give us MORE WORDS!

JonPreston fake quoting: "an estimate of excess mortality among men"

Noooo....
This is the exact quote from the Mediazona article I linked:

"According to our calculations, by June 2024, approximately 120,000 Russian soldiers have died in the war (with a 95% confidence interval of 106,000 to 140,000).
The Probate Registry estimate includes all military deaths..."
JonPreston: "No where in this report does it specifically mention Russian military deaths caused by action in Ukraine."

It does, and you'd have to block one eye entirely, while drastically squinting the other in order to avoid seeing the clear meaning of that text.

But why would you do that?

Yes, I read it. It's was just more of the gobbledygook crap you post here. If you had any respect for yourself, you'd stop making excuses for throwing out false information on President Trump, so people like me don't challenge you on it. Go project your BS somewhere else.
