BOSTON -- Drivers for Uber and Lyft will earn a minimum pay standard of $32.50 per hour under a settlement announced Thursday by Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, in a deal that also includes a suite of benefits and protections.
The two companies will also be required to pay a combined $175 million to the state to resolve allegations that the companies violated Massachusetts wage and hour laws, a substantial majority of which will be distributed to current and former drivers. ... The companies were pushing a ballot question that would classify drivers as independent contractors eligible for some benefits, but Campbell said the settlement stops the threat of the ballot question.

If so, they’ll still be dependent on Trump stopping the taxes on their tips, because life in MA ain’t cheap!
$32.50 an hour - it’ll be cheaper to just get a taxi.

they will have “shifts” and set times drivers can work.
Suppose you are an Uber driver and you make a 20-mile one way trip with a passenger. If you drive at an average of 40 mph for this trip, you make the trip in 30 minutes. Your base pay is $16.25 for that 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, you have to account for the fuel, maintenance and use of your vehicle. The current IRS allowable reimbursement rate for business use of a vehicle is 67 cents per mile, which means your average vehicle operating cost for that 20-mile trip is $13.40. And remember … you have to double this operating cost if you are making an empty return trip.
This is why Uber and Lyft are basically sweatshops on wheels.

“The Boston Taxi Drivers Association (BTDA), an affiliate of the United Steelworkers (USW) representing 1,400 cab drivers is calling on the Mayor of Boston and the Police Commissioner to order all Uber-X and Uber-XL for-hire transportation vehicles off the streets of Boston until the city can regulate and license all Uber drivers and cars.”
And I will no longer tip an Uber driver in Boston!
This was bound to happen. These driver services cut corners, paid low wages, used personal insurance requirements for drivers instead of commercial insurance, and lots of other stuff. They profited but drivers didn’t, wore out their vehicles and so forth. Good to see it sort itself out and Uber and Lyft paying their fair share.
I need a cousin Eddie because my vision is so awful I don’t want to drive any more and planned to take Ubers instead. No way I’m taking a bus.
Similar to working fast food for low wage, if the employee intends it as a career, the prospects may not be good.
These services were originally set up as fill-in work for an hour or two or maybe three when the individual had the extra time and as they desired. As with any job, if not happy with the rewards, simply stop doing it. No one is forcing them.
If I want to make a part-time job into full-time it might not work out. We shall see.
I wonder what a ride from the airpot to downtown or some metro destination might cost...
I used to travel all the time, used Uber and found that nearly every driver was new or less than 2-3 months. Discussion found that the work was unsteady and failed to cover the out-of-pocket costs to maintain their cars. The work was transitory as it was a losing proposition.
At that rate, I’ll buy a car, reg. ins. etc., even fuel it, and drive myself - at a lower rate than the Uber/Lyft.
I guess old school taxis are a thing of the past?
I’d hate to be the guy that paid a quarter-million for a big city medallion that used to be required to drive a taxi. Paid it shortly before the transition to Uber began, I mean.
