BOSTON -- Drivers for Uber and Lyft will earn a minimum pay standard of $32.50 per hour under a settlement announced Thursday by Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, in a deal that also includes a suite of benefits and protections.

The two companies will also be required to pay a combined $175 million to the state to resolve allegations that the companies violated Massachusetts wage and hour laws, a substantial majority of which will be distributed to current and former drivers. ... The companies were pushing a ballot question that would classify drivers as independent contractors eligible for some benefits, but Campbell said the settlement stops the threat of the ballot question.

Also like how the government used the lawsuit to quash a ballot initiative they didn’t like. Who cares about what the voters wanted.

Not that we lowly citizens have a right to petition or anything.

It’s as if the people running things don’t know or even care about basic economics.

If Uber and Lyft don’t like it and want a different business model they should buy and insure their own fleets of vehicles and hire employee drivers. They have choices.

No. Boston is a sports mecca so the companies couldn’t afford to stop doing business there.
This could be a blessing. Now they have an excuse not to pick up the Dindu Nuffins. Several of their drivers have been killed by blacks.

The entire reason Uber/Lyft worked was because the drivers were independent who could work 1 or 12 hour days, on any day they liked, & take fares as they saw fit. That flexibility worked well and only got f’d up when the gov. stuck their nose into it.

If you don’t want to be a driver, then don’t drive. Now none will be making any money because even if Uber/Lyft stayed, the customers won’t pay the increased rates.

This is not difficult.

So Uber and Lyft will raise their rates in Massachusettes and fewer people will use them.

Just sayin, they have choices if they don’t like it. It works for them nicely because they’re just sitting back collecting money. The old days companies had their own fleets, company maintained safe fleets, company insured, trained drivers etc. The drivers didn’t have to worry about buying a new car every 2 years because their 2 year old car is now a high mileage beater.☺

Potential customers will see that getting to where they want to go will cost $50, and say “no thanks”. Maybe take a bus instead.

a substantial majority of which will be distributed to current and former drivers

A substantial remainder of which will be distributed to current and former Massachusetts politicians. (You know that's true!)

Uber will either raise prices so high which will eliminate it as a viable company or only the two remaining drivers will get the $32.50 an hour.

Exactly. But hey, they wanted to get rid of Uber and Lyft anyway. They hated the fact that it made a dent in the taxi cab medallion scam.

I’ve always supported people who wanted to do Uber or left for whatever they thought their services were worth, something they could do in their spare time to make money. That’s the end of all that.

"32.50 an hour...Working one hour a day...Sitting around for 8-9 hours.......Wonder how much those “”rides “” will cost...."

..... I live in CA and was asking an UBER driver about this same hourly wage subject just last week ..... In CA we have something called Prop 22 which guarantees some kind of minimum wage while on duty ....

..... Don't quote me on this but from what I gather .... They are only paid for the time logged while they are driving to the Customer and to their destination. So they have to stay active driving customers to qualify for the guaranteed minimum wage earning. So the more time your are driving to and delivering customers the more guaranteed wage you earn.
