Trump proposes green cards for foreign grads of US colleges, departing from anti-immigrant rhetoric

MIAMI (AP) — Former President Donald Trump said in an interview posted on Thursday he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges, a sharp departure from the anti-immigrant rhetoric he typically uses on the campaign trail.

Trump was asked about plans for companies to be able to import the “best and brightest” in a podcast taped Wednesday with venture capitalists and tech investors called the “All-In.”

“What I want to do and what I will do is you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges too, anybody graduates from a college. You go there for two years or four years,” he said, vowing to address this concern on day one.

As someone who works with some of dei grads in healthcare I’m not sure it’s not a bad idea.

There’s a problem. We educate someone, then we send their talents to another country, instead of keeping them here.

I am generally in favor of this , unpopular as it may be here.

And for good reasons

Especially in favor of retaining and recruiting standout foreign students with advanced technical degrees in STEM disciplines.

These are some of the best and brightest people in the world and they are vital to Americas technological future.

They do not usually compete with Americans for jobs because they often are pioneering new technology and manufacturing methods and there is no one else in the world who has their knowledge and skills . Thus they are more often than not adding to our economic growth and building good paying jobs for native Americans, not stealing jobs from native Americans

They are also usually very pro America and they wish to assimilate and be part of our country

IMHO, Tump gets it right on this one, assuming the program is properly structured to recruit outstanding talent - so thumbs up to the orange dude

“I guess Ramaswamy got to him.”

Maybe. I was so hoping he wouldn’t be taken in by the shtick.

I think it’s a good idea to keep the brightest students in the USA. Perhaps only for STEM degrees. Perhaps only Master’s degrees.

Strong background check, of course.

It’s better that then educating them, sending them away, and then potentially competing with them.

Exactly my point. Some American dei grads are really weak. Check out the failing rate at ucla medical school.

Exactly. Maybe to productive people like engineers, but certainly not to “studies” people who hate America. A college degree does not automatically mean that person is going to useful to America. More than likely, they majored in Hate-America Studies and will foment revolution here.

They’re probably needed back in their home country more than here. If they go home and make things better, maybe they’ll stop sneaking across our border. We have too many foreign born here now.

Depends on the degree. For medical students, engineering students, math and hard sciences - yeah, if they graduate in the top 10%. For all other majors, hard no. We don't need foreign born humanities majors - we have enough home-grown idiots with useless degrees.

I can see wanting to keep foreign talent here, but not everyone who graduates from college represents talent we want to keep. Run it based on need and with stringent background checks. Don’t treat green cards like participation awards.

Universities make more money from foreign students. Consequently, they lower the academic requirements for them, since they are a cash cow. Giving them green cards at graduation is a very bad idea.

“NO! They are already getting special treatment for jobs here.”

I agree in principle, but visit any engineering school today, and you’ll find 10% of the students being Americans. Smarter Americans now go into ‘finance’ and crap like that, very few will actually work towards a ‘hard’ degree.

Is Trump going to require the same from countries where US students graduate?

Bad idea . Foreign exchange students are largely scammers that colleges look the other way since they make more money off of them. I’m guessing some of the Silicon Valley types begged Trump to allow more invaders from India to come here.
Frankly the entire student visa program needs to be overhauled

They might get two-months of green card time for
1each year studied here
for which at least $10,000 tuition was paid.

The institution should be federal student loan eligible and must receive at least half of its tuition from non-governmental sources.

The degrees should be limited at first: BSEE, MD, DDS, nursing, etc.

For each year thereafter at least $6,000 of FICA tax must be prepaid (French-style) by the person’s employer at the beginning of the calendar year to get an extended time green card.

The leftist media wants portray DJT as anti immigrant when he has actually always been anti illegal. The low number of properly visa holding foreign students compared to the flood of Democrat orchestrated illegals makes this a fine trade. While a good chunk of my ancestors have been here over three hundred years there is one fourth of my heritage that came from those 1895 to 1915 Swedes. So immigrant is not what I have a problem with — instead it is unvetted illegals in the giant flood from one region only.
