California’s COVID numbers are on the rise thanks, in part, to new subvariants, suggesting an earlier-than-normal start to the summer season.
The percentage of COVID tests coming back with positive results in the state rose to 5.3% for the week that ended June 3, up from 2.2% the month before.
The numbers are still relatively low — last summer’s peak positive test rate was 13.1% — but the increases have the attention of doctors and health officials as the summer travel season begins.
“Numbers are definitely going up,” said Dr. Elizabeth Hudson, regional chief of infectious disease at Kaiser Permanente Southern California. Among Kaiser’s 4.8 million Southern California members, the increase in COVID is mostly among non-hospitalized people.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported an average of 106 COVID cases for the week ending June 2. That’s up from 67 cases a day for the week that ended May 12.
“We have seen this happen over the last 4 1/2 years. We know we tend to see another wave around this time,” Hudson said. This one “started a little bit earlier, so it may crest a little earlier, and oftentimes we don’t see those hospitalized cases until a little further in.”
COVID levels also are rising in wastewater. In Los Angeles County, sewage levels were at 16% of the winter peak for the week that ended May 25, up from 8% for the week that ended May 4. In Santa Clara County — the Bay Area’s most populous county — COVID levels in wastewater are considered high from San Jose to Palo Alto. There also is a notable rise in samples in San Francisco’s sewage.

The nice thing about COVID in San Francisco’s sewage is you can smell it all over the financial district and elsewhere. The city has a SINGLE sewer for both sanitary and storm water and the lovely sewer smells waft up from the streets all over town.

Mask up and make sure everything is wiped down in isopropyl alcohol before it is taken into the home.
Test daily and quarantine for 30 days if you test positive - this is for the safety of your family, especially grandma, who is especially vulnerable. You do not want to be responsible for killing off grandma.

Funny how these little viruses show themselves up like clockwork every 5 to 6 months before a presidential election. This is exactly what happened last time! Boy, those are pretty smart viruses. They know how to time themselves perfectly to disrupt an election….How do you like them apples! Smart little boogers!

I’ve gotten sick three times since early 2020 and not once did I even think of getting tested. Why would I? I knew what I had to do—stay home (which goes along with not being around other people), rest, eat and drink healthily, etc. I simply do not understand the people who rush to get tested. It’s like they’re longing for it to be positive so they can somehow boast about it.

Emphasizing that I am not medically trained, please consider the following about California and CV19.
A part of the problem with rising CV19 in summertime L.A. County might be this. People may be spending more time indoors to avoid the hot sun, their skin consequently not producing enough vitamin D3 to maintain healthy natural immunity.

Because there are some of us that Covid could be very dangerous to. Granted, I don't live in CA, but still, I have to be very careful being a one time Covid patient and current Long Covid sufferer.
So before everyone goes off on their "oh, boo hoo, it ain't no big thing" mantra, please try to keep in mind that for many of us, it IS a big deal and we care greatly.
I had it last month - pretty bad but I tested negative. The only way I knew I had it is that I had the exact same symptoms as I did when I first had it 2 yrs ago. Loss of taste and smell, no fever, severe aches and pains and unable to get up out of the bed for 2 days and 7-8 days to recover but still weak and tired for several weeks afterwards. My sister is on the west coast and has it now.
