Baltics join the ammunitions race

With a shortage of mortar shells in reserves across Europe, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are setting up their own ammunition factories to be ready in case of a potential attack from Russia.

In Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia — three Baltic states on the edge of the European Union that all share a border with Russia — defense is a key concern.

All the more so, since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine in February 2022. According to NATO statistics, the defense spending of the three states greatly exceeded the minimum 2% of GDP in 2023, and it is expected to rise this year.

big ammo or little ammo....I’m ok with it. after all, look what the folks in the middle East are able to do with what ever is available. our founding fathers were all for “innovation” of the current technologies of the day, including weapons of war. ‘tis a grand tradition indeed to be able to stand against the wiles of dictatorial powers. “IF you think that government is overbearing now just wait until you are completely disarmed” applies.

Baltic countries have something wider than a draft lottery.

There is a mandatory 9-11 month military training for every healthy man. Boys do this after high school and then enter the reserve.

From time to time men under 40-45 are called in for refreshment training and the employers are obligated by law to give them leave for that.

If Russia’s attack was “full-scale” the situation would have been over in a few days...and Ukraine would be a glowing, glass-covered open space.

Russia’s attack was full-scale.

This is apparent in the way that the Kremlin has removed men, tanks, missiles and materiel from Kaliningrad, from the border with Finland, from the Far east etc. and desperately thrown them in Eastern Ukraine.

The initial attack in 2022 Feb was an attempted headblow that failed. Then Putin put in everything and did so by September 2022. Still no luck for him

It’s not “revenge for communism”, more “we’ve been under the Kremlin’s thumb before and nearly died, we’re not going to go that way a third time”

Muscowy won’t attack Kyiv with nukes as that, 1200 year old city is considered the birthplace of the Rus - i.e. the peoples who later became the Bialorussians, Ukrainians and Muscowites.
