Student debt in the U.S. has ballooned to over $1.7 trillion, burdening millions of Americans with financial stress. Rising tuition costs and stagnating wages are considered to be the major drivers of this issue.
To gain insight into how this is affecting students, Visual Capitalist's Marcus Lu visualized the results of WalletHub’s Student Money Survey.
This survey was conducted in 2024 with a nationally representative sample of 210 students. Results were normalized by gender and income.
Student wealth surveys can provide unique insights into the financial preparedness of younger Americans.
Starting with post-grad fears, it appears that the majority of students are afraid of either not finding a job, or paying off their debt.
Some of these worries could subside in the future, as the federal government appears committed to cancelling federal student debt.
The latest news came on May 22, 2024, when the Education Department announced it would cancel $7.7 billion for borrowers who received Public Service Loan Forgiveness, which includes professions like teachers and nurses.
Regardless, 77% of students surveyed believed that their tuition was a good investment.
Another highlight from this study was that nearly half (49%) of students feel that their school does not do enough to teach them about personal finance.
When survey respondents were asked to choose which topic they wished they had learned more about, the most common answer was “How to do my taxes”.

K - 12s have been in the fad of “everyday math”—but that flash in the pan omits budgeting and learning how to file taxes.
Feelings.
Nothing more than feelings.
Trying to forget
All the money I owe!
Unless you obtain a degree in stem, your education Cost will be very difficult to pay back.
Yep.
And most kids don’t want to study that hard. And they haven’t learned to do that in k-12.
Now factor most women don’t want to study in a stem field, they’d rather marry a guy in a stem field.
Now factor in most college debt is female-held.
And realize every student debt forgiveness done by government is done to secure the female vote and have men pay for it.
The post-grad sentiment looks to be realistic.
Regards,
My guess is the ones who have been absolved by debt have already thought about jumping back into the pool.
Students: get you money back from the universities; stop screwing the taxpapers.
Idiots fell for thier masters design
Survey?
How’s bout a survey of people who graduated up to now and who paid our own way?
That’s what you need to survey because WE are the ones being asked to pay for others who want THEIR education for free!
However, if you graduated with a STEM degree or a degree where moving into the workforce is a natural progression, those numbers won’t be accurate. They should break this chart down by type of degree. I’m sure what we will find is French lit and Women’s study majors are the ones answering these questions.
True dat!
Big Education (BE) is financially raping their student body. There are no market pressures that would exert control on BE’s tuition, fees, and other charges. BE knows that any price they fix will be paid by the students. Where the students get the money is of no concern to BE - pay up front or go away. And if a student meets the exorbitant number set by BE, it is still up to the student to somehow absorb enough information to get a job in life. Most often the effort by the student to acquire information is thwarted by educators that are far more interested in acquiring tenure and grants than they are about educating BE’s paying customers. Add to that the underlying feeling that BE is unconcerned about providing a quality product to their students.
So we are concerned about how children feel?
“WE are the ones being asked to pay”
How about ‘told’?
You’re right
God help us. The most ‘educated’ are the stupidest among us.
“I’ll just vote Democrat because they’ll bail me out!”
College is a Scam - Indoctrination not Education
The short video is very instructive and worth the watch. Would love to know how the student being quizzed feels now...
