Some Americans live in a parallel economy where everything is terrible
Yahoo Finance ^ | 05 23 2024 | Rick Newman

Is the economy booming or busting?

Depends on whom you ask.

The official data is buoyant — economic growth is solid, the job market is strong, and stocks keep hitting record highs.

Yet many Americans think the economy stinks.

The latest gloomy indicator is a Guardian-Harris survey in which 55% of respondents said they think the economy is shrinking and 56% think we’re in the midst of a recession.

Economic output, adjusted for inflation, grew by a solid 3% during the most recent 12-month period. The unemployment rate is 3.9%. And the US economy created over 3.5 million jobs in 2023.

You basically can’t have a recession when the economy is growing and employers keep hiring at this rate. But this Harris poll isn’t a one-off.

My husband and I are comfortable but I bag lunch it for 30 years so it’s not like I didn’t deserve it but for $145 2 people can eat for two or three days that’s ridiculous. Yeah sometimes I buy steak but I earned it. It’s ridiculous to spend so much on certain items.

How do people with medium incomes and children make ends meet??

“Another challenge for Biden is that many Americans are probably comparing today’s US economy to the economy in 2019. On that basis, yes, inflation is worse now, gas prices are higher, and there are unnerving wars in Europe and the Middle East.”

LOL! GNS!

What “war” in Europe?

If it’s booming why is my industry starting to slow like we’ve never seen before? I do monument inscription. Having their loved ones names on the existing monument is very important to most people. Slowdowns were always slight and short lived. Important doesn’t equal necessary however. In Biden’s economy after paying for the funeral and the burial dropping a grand or more for the inscription may be getting a lot harder.

If you were to subtract deficit ( created “helicopter” money ) spending from GDP it would show how the economy is shrinking at an alarming rate.

LOL! at their fantasy numbers for the economy.

Their argument is basically that the economy is booming and tens if not hundreds of millions of Americans are just too stupid to realize it. DO keep pushing this argument Lefties. I’m sure that will go over well with the voters.

——Booming——

A better adjective might be muddling through.

City States are failing, destructing before our eyes. Tent cities within cities defy the concept of booming. Block after block after mile after mile of closed and vacant storefronts are testimony to a failed economy.

American auto manufacturing will effectively cease this summer. There are no customers and the dealers have literally years of inventory stagnant on lots. How can they sell ‘24 models when they are burdened with unsalable ‘22 and ‘23 models, (don’t even think of the ‘coming ‘25 models)

The auto foreclosure rate has grown to the point where some banks don’t make auto loans. No loans, no sales, no manufacturing

The Dow is at 40,000 but prices are up 20 percent, so effectively the Dow is at 32,000 adjusting for inflation. If you started out 2021 with 32,000 in stocks, and now they are worth 40,000, you DIDN’T MAKE A NICKEL, you merely kept up with inflation.

Yeah - us folks in the Middle Class are living in the universe where having our money worth 25% less than a couple years ago hurts...

In Biden’s economy after paying for the funeral and the burial dropping a grand or more for the inscription may be getting a lot harder.

Mom died 8 years ago. She wanted a basic cremation. We did a few add ons...a nice urn, extra death certificates, them handling the obituary placement. Total cost: $900

My sister passed last week. I contacted the same funeral home for the same package...$2400. I made some calls and got her cremated for $1528.28 at another establishment.

Yeah, we are all imagining a bad economy.

There are numerous You tube videos describing the terrific American Auto industry production/sales problems. That is especially true of Ford and Stellantis. I simply don’t know about GM

There is no indication that the situation can improve within the next month or so and dealers simply can’t absorb more vehicles they can’t sell.
