Shock study shows how 42M recipients spend their food stamps - and they're not buying broccoli

An alarming study has spotlighted how 42 million food stamp recipients spend their welfare handouts on ultra-processed junk food.

Coca-Cola, Sprite and other soft drinks are the most commonly-bought items via the $135 billion-a-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a new study says.

Candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, ice cream, cookies, and other ultra-processed food dominates the top 20 items, says a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).

Report author Matthew Dickerson says recipients spend 'spend significant portions of their allotments on junk food.'

These 'non-nutritious foods' include 'sugary beverages and ultra-processed foods, which can lead to poor health,' says the 35-page study.

The prevalence of junk food is another reason to trim SNAP, which has ballooned this century and gets recipients hooked on handouts, says Dickerson.

The research comes as Washington lawmakers debate the text of an updated farm bill, with Republicans gunning to cut some $27 billion worth of nutrition program funding over 10 years

Maybe you’ve noticed, but those ‘other options’ don’t win.

I don’t like the way such a diverse nation is ‘dichotomized’ politically, but I don’t like throwing my vote away, either. The one time I did, I helped give us Bill Clinton. I won’t do that again.

What if you have money for a tattoo?

I gotta think if it was only rice and beans they’d get bored with their diet and take the pounds off.

Then I don’t understand why you didn’t recognize that I was talking about transfer payments when I said “transfer payments” and not “SNAP.”

We don't even BUY most of those things anymore. Soft drinks especially, they have just gotten too expensive.

I have no idea why soda got crazy expensive, moreso than almost anything else. I'll get ginger ale for mixed drinks, but that's about it. Used to be three 12-packs/$12, on sale it was $0.25 a can, maybe less. Now it's $9-10 per case, a 3-4x increase!

Annual budget is 135 billion. That’s a 2% cut. Cry me a river.

Make NO mistake.. Major CORPORATIONS SUPPORT and DEPEND on "Snap" recipients buying their "junk" in order to sustain their own PROFITABILITY!

SELLING SUGAR WATER is BIG BUSINESS!

“Some people are probably also trying to drink more healthily”

Or they are just lazy, and spending other people’s money carelessly. If they were using the money to stock up on bottled water for disaster prep, I’d be fine with it. But you and I know that is not what is happening. Like 99.9999% of that is not that.

>I hope you and your confreres are prepared to enjoy another 4 years of Biden.

Oh, I’m QUITE prepared TY: No mortgage, no CC debt carried, savings, ammo...THINK I’ll survive just fine enough.

Maybe 4 more years will finally extinguish the faux dichotomy.
Though, I doubt it, cults like those are hard to quit *shrug*.

If so, we might be able to rebuild our Republic again after teh (R|D)NC disasters.
