Are you for real?

Your first take was that, because of Slovakia's prior support of Ukraine, the attempted assassin had to be an obvious Russian asset.

But upon being corrected as to Fico's pro-Russian sympathies, without any hesitation, you pivot to claiming he and his attempted assassin must both be Russian assets, as though it makes any sense for Russia to attempt to assassinate the Prime Minister whose party just got a majority in the Slovakian parliament on a platform committed to ending military support for Ukraine.

"with a little salt, sugar, lard"

Wouldn't want to be guilty of the heinous crime of lard-forgettin' in your Spam casserole!

"'E's forgotten the lard again, 'e 'as!"

Captain: "Arrrrr! Tie that scurvy dog to the yardarm!"

One of my favorite bits.

Did you check out the "Spanish sauce"? Green peppers and celery leaves.

Nah, I'm thinking Ancho peppers and cilantro, with some dirty cumin and cayenne.

I just scored on a pound of Thai peppers. That would blow the hair of those 1950s Spam-lovers back a little bit.

"Gladys, why is the Spam 'n Limas a bit warm?"

Invading, conquering and annexing other countries is bad, mmmkay? Very unstable. Lots of death and destruction. Might=right, free for all.

Assisting countries being invaded, conquered and annexed is good as it reinforces peace and stability by imparting huge costs upon the aggressor which discourages potential additional aggressors.

Like punishing criminals deters other potential criminals.

Got it now?

Invading, conquering and annexing other countries is bad, mmmkay?

Do you hold this standard at all times and in all places, for all countries historically? Honest question.

Might=right

This is literally how geopolitics works in practice.

Assisting countries being invaded, conquered and annexed is good as it reinforces peace and stability by imparting huge costs upon the aggressor which discourages potential additional aggressors.

We just had a story on FR earlier this week about how Russians just walked past a nonexistent defensive line because the money that was SUPPOSED to go to it just got directed elsewhere by unknown Ukrainians.

Sometimes, the country being invaded is as crappy (or crappier) than the invader. Neither one deserves our support.

I laughed when I read that and thought, “Just buy a can of freakin’ Ro-Tel.”

I just scored on a pound of Thai peppers.

Those red ones? Oh yeah, those do pack a little heat.

Where the rubber meets the road with this crap is the unlawful invasion, conquering and occupation of Palestinian territory by Israel. The territory remains officially categorized as the unlawfully occupied territory of Palestine. Does United States policy support coming to the aid of Palestine and ejecting Israel from the unlawfully occupied territory?

Was the Israeli unlawful war of aggression in 1967 bad, mmmkay?

Is the continued Israeli unlawful occupation bad, mmmkay?

Is the U.S. policy of using its veto at the UN Security Council to defend Israel, and to prevent Palestine from becoming a recognized state, bad?

Somehow, the high dudgeon sounds different when Israel is involved, or when speaking of the United States annexing Texas. It seems that invading or annexing is not categorically mmmkay bad.

“Sometimes, the country being invaded is as crappy (or crappier) than the invader. Neither one deserves our support”

Then you are amoral. It’s the point of demoralization campaigns. Destroying a target population’s will to defend itself against an aggressor. Russia is attacking the post-WWII detente the world operated by for 70 years. If that is not defended be ready for wars everywhere and worse. Don’t complain when it comes to your door.

amoral

[ ey-mawr-uhl, a-mawr-, ey-mor-, a-mor- ]

Phonetic (Standard)
IPA
adjective
not involving questions of right or wrong; without moral quality; neither moral nor immoral.
having no moral standards, restraints, or principles; unaware of or indifferent to questions of right or wrong:
a completely amoral person.

On the contrary, I think perpetuating the conflict the way we have (resulting in countless more Ukrainians dying than otherwise would have had they settled in April 2022 as was likely to happen had Boris Johnson not intervened) has been incredibly immoral. Try again.

I don't think I have worry about Russia bringing war to my doorstep. But, more importantly, would you like to have a list of all the wars that have occurred throughout the world following World War II?

Russia invaded Ukraine

Iraq invaded Kuwait

North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam

North Korea invaded South Korea

These are the major wars since WWII.

They were all KGB-client states invading, conquering and annexing their neighbors or trying to.

These are the major wars since WWII.

The Second Congo War (1998 - 2003) outpaces all deaths in Russia/Ukraine, the first Gulf War, and the Korean War put together (and possibly the Vietnam War, if you're only including the American side of it).

North Vietnam's invasion of South Vietnam was only but one stage of the large Vietnam War, which began in 1955 when Vietnam defeated the French. Heck, let's consider the Indochina Wars in general, which began right after World War II ended!

You have the Soviet-Afghan War during the 1980s, which we were party to by proxy on the side of the Afghans.

You have the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, which had over a million civilian deaths at minimum.

You have both Sudanese Civil Wars (from 1955 to 1972 and from 1983 to 2005), and then the South Sudanese Civil War (2013 to 2020) with an aggregate death toll north of a million.

You have the ongoing Syrian Civil War and Yemeni Civil War, each going on 10+ years currently.

You have the Angolan Civil War. The Ethiopian Civil War. The Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s (which makes the first Gulf War look like a piker in comparison). The Rwandan Civil War. The Algerian War of Independence. The Bangladesh War of Independence. The Burundian Civil War. The Somali Civil War. The First Congo War. The Partition of India. The "La Violencia" civil war in Colombia. The Greek Civil War. The Lebanese Civil War. All conflicts with 100,000 fatalities at minimum.

Heck, you didn't even mention the Iraq War or the War in Afghanistan that we directly participated in, which make Iraq's invasion of Kuwait look like nothing by comparison! What did Russia have to do with either of those?

Also, since you seem so dead set against annexation in principle, let's consider India's annexation of the state of Hyderabad in 1948, over a period of 5 days in September: a "police action" by India that result in the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians at minimum. Less than two weeks prior to this, Hyderabad had requested to bring their geopolitical dispute with India to the UN Security Council. Per this communique dated 9-01-1948, the official opinion of the US State Department was that America "should take no initiative toward [Security Council] consideration."

And so a princely state which had existed in some form since 1724, whose ruling government desired to remain independent of India and Pakistan, was (for a multitude of reasons) swiftly annexed by India, with nary a peep from the United States or the United Nations that I can find.

Only four "major wars" since WWII? Get out of here with that myopia.
