Ukraine forced to retreat to stop bloodbath over fears Putin has made major breakthrough

Russia looks set to seize the pivotal Kharkiv towns of Lukyantsi and Vovchansk after an abrupt Ukrainian retreat. The Ukrainian military said that the decision was made to avoid a potential bloodbath on the streets. One spokesperson told the AFP that it withdrew soldiers from the towns "in response to enemy fire and assaults from ground troops, and to save the lives of our servicemen and avoid losses".

The head of Vovchansk police Oleksii Kharkivskyi shared an update from the besieged village this morning, saying: "Russians are taking positions on the streets of the city, the situation is extremely difficult, but even in such conditions the population is being evacuated."

Unfortunately, the Russian Army is not nimble enough to concentrate a full Corps in the area of weakness.

But even a full armored division could probably put Kharkiv at risk.

Speaking as an experienced armchair general and basement keyboard warrior, this move puzzles me.

Yes, it diverts Ukraine forces from other fronts. It puts Ukraine on the back foot. But I can’t imagine Russia laying siege to Kharkiv, or encouraging Ukraine Azov dead-enders to make a stand there ala Berlin 1945

Taking Odessa (or merely surrounding it), and cutting off Ukraine from the sea, would, on the other hand, end all threats to Crimea, and above all signal to everyone the end of Ukraine as a functioning state.

The border North of Kharkiv is the principal invasion route of Russia.

Odessa is not.

There were four “battles of Kharkiv” during WW2. It’s the most strategic city on that front.

This is a perfect example of "war by strategic planning."

Putin stuck to his plan -- a war of attrition until the Ukies and US/NATO were "attrited out."

Now comes payday and what we knew all along! We were fools for not seeing this from the beginning. Unfortunately, we continued to be "fools:"
- $200 billion of our printed money sent to these scam artists
- WMD's in Iraq
- No one left behind in Afghanistan
- The commies are coming to Vietnam

Not much of a track record you got there!

McDonald’s Egg McMuffins are entirely too expensive. I don’t expect their price to go down.

Ruzzia taking Odessa is for the moment impossible. They lack air support, they lack naval support, and advancing by land will be a bloodbath for the Ruzzians as they get bogged down at every river crossing and get annihilated by Ukrainian artillery.

Kharkiv is an easier target for them. And Kharkiv isn’t easy.

Any updates on egg prices ?

I got a dozen free-range eggs from a local PA farmer for $3/dozen.

In Russia, eggs are $40/dozen, if they can be found at all, and housewives everywhere are rioting in the streets demanding the right to gender-transition their LGBTQ children, and a nearly dead, cancerous Putin is hiding in his $billion dacha in Sochi with his Muslim mistresses, while North Korean terror squads roam the country as it collapses --- or so I am told

I have no combat experience beyond losing at Risk! constantly, but I agree, Odessa would be a terrible battle.

My guess is that Odessa may become a negotiation point. A neutral city, with a guarantee of access to the Black Sea by Transnistria.

Megan, why don't you volunteer to fight with the Ukrainian slave soldiers? The bought-and-paid-for Zelensky is happy to put women on the front line so you can cash the checks that you have been writing with your mouth.

No, IF Odessa remains in Western hands, access in/ out of the Black see will be by Russia, with full cargo inspection rights.

The West tricked Vlad once already, he will not allow western weapons to be transported on grain shipments….best Vlad takes Odessa, I am sure he will allow Ukie grain in/out for a small administrative fee.

Plenty of us predicted the end 2 years ago. No one beats Russia at wars of attrition. It’s just been 2 predictable years of pointless bloodshed.

But one silver lining is the fattened Swiss accounts of the Uke “leaders.” At least someone has benefited. We saw the Russians waltz in through the non-existent fortifications just the other day. The $ probably went to buy homes in Florida for the Uke Spooks who post here.

It's a small thing, but so telling and irritating. And it's widespread in the media. (Assuming most of the titles of Ukraine related articles are the originals, as FR rules suggest they should be)

One the one hand we have Ukraine, the nation.

And who are they fighting a war with?

PUTIN! Not another country, not an national Army even, not even really a person with a title: President Vladimir Putin, just PUTIN.

Not so subtle propaganda. Good leaders have three letter abreviations:

Evil German and Russian leaders meanwhile have 5 or 6 letter names with no other honorifics or first names included:

It's silly and childish, but that's how much of the media rolls now!

Ukraine isn't fighting one man, they are fighting a nation. The nation just re-elected it's President. (Something Ukraine can't say about Zelenskyy.) It's an absurd convention to continute to attribute the actions of one nation to a single person, while portraying the other nation as a collective entity.
