President Biden doesn't believe his bad poll numbers, and neither do many of his closest advisers, according to people familiar with the matter.
Why it matters: The dismissiveness of the poor polling is sincere, not public spin, according to Democrats who have spoken privately with the president and his team.
That bedrock belief has informed Biden's largely steady-as-she-goes campaign — even as many Democrats outside the White House are agitating for the campaign to change direction, given that Biden is polling well behind where he was four years ago.
The public polling simply doesn't reflect the president's support, they say.
Driving the news: In public and private, Biden has been telling anyone who will listen that he's gaining ground — and is probably up — on Donald Trump in their rematch from 2020. "While the press doesn't write about it, the momentum is clearly in our favor, with the polls moving towards us and away from Trump," Biden told donors in Medina, Wash., on Saturday. A few days earlier, confronted with some of his bad poll numbers in a rare interview with CNN, Biden offered a more sweeping indictment of polling methodology.
"The polling data has been wrong all along. How many — you guys do a poll at CNN. How many folks you have to call to get one response?" Zoom in: The latest polling in the six battleground states likely to decide the presidential race — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — doesn't paint a rosy picture for Biden.
A new New York Times/Sienna survey, which sampled more than 4,000 people across the swing states, had Trump winning five of them among registered voters.
A Bloomberg News poll last month similarly found Biden trailing Trump in six of seven swing states (they also polled North Carolina).

Extended counting periods and polls predicting a narrow victory go hand in hand. It's called "plausible deniability".
As long as they know how many fake votes to create, and can give themselves the time to do it, they can win any election and always by a slim margin.

When the results are already phoned in, Democrats do not even pretend to care what external input looks like. Obama 2012 was the best example. His debate with Romney was completely staged and so he phoned it in. Then the LSM takes over.

To the extent the polls move, they’re likely to be in Trump’s favor. Because the answer to the question “are you better off than you were 4 years ago” isn’t looking good for Biden with a huge chunk of voters.

People keep pointing to Trump rally size, but the fact is rally size means very little for get-out-the-vote (GOTV) drives. People who show up for rallies are already voting for the guy. A pol who does big rallies is just wasting his supporters’ time and his own campaign money. Traditional GOTV involves paying canvassers to get voters to the polls. Trump’s rallies were expensive, with one in Tulsa costing $2.2m. That could have paid for 100,000 canvasser hours.

Trump is back to his big rally antics again, spending huge sums to not move the needle. Biden is likely counting on GOTV to close the gap. And he will once again have a big money advantage for hiring canvassers.
Biden’s problem is that he is the incumbent in a period when many people feel worse off. The blank slate he had working for him in 2020 is in the rear view mirror. Many middle of the road people who picked him in 2020 now have buyer’s regret. So many of the people he helps bring to the polls in 2024 might end up voting against him.
