Japanese angst as India set to become 4th largest economy
Deutsche Weil ^ | 10th May 2024 | Julian Ryall

Once an economic powerhouse that was the envy of much of the world, there is deep concern in Tokyo that the economies of China and Germany have already surpassed Japan's — and that India's will do so next year.

The announcement that in 2025 India will overtake Japan in nominal gross domestic product in dollar terms has shocked Tokyo, which had until 2010 been the undisputed second-largest economy in the world but is now on the brink of slipping to fifth place.

In estimates released in late April, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicated that India's nominal GDP will reach $4.34 trillion (€4.03 trillion) in 2025, surpassing Japan's $4.31 trillion. The timing of India's surge into fourth place in the world comes one year earlier than the IMF's last estimate, due in large part to the weakness of the Japanese yen.

Japan's decline in the global economic standings follows the government's confirmation that the nation slipped behind Germany in 2023. The shock at India likely surpassing Japan next year is comparable to 2010, when a buoyant China replaced Japan as the world's second-largest economy.

...The whole idea of Abenomics was to drive growth at businesses, but structural reforms were also needed to push productivity, but that is very hard to do in a country that is aging and where there is resistance to change, to digitalization and people who have been in positions for a long time simply prefer the old ways

... Japan could not match India's investment in infrastructure and a rapidly growing middle class, Fink added, while Germany had surpassed Japan primarily on the precipitous drop of the yen against the euro over the last 12 years — a decline of 40% that put the real exchange rate effectively at a 50-year low.

If Japan doesn’t want to lose it’s place in the world they need to get back to making things. Starting with babies.

Largest 2023 economies by gdp:

Misleading. The Russian ruble is worthless outside of Russia.

But you can buy a lot with the ruble in Russia.

You mean India... the former, not Japan. Japan needs to keep up it’s populations. Without Japan, China would have much less in the shipping arena, even COSCO would be at a loss. The Chinese need Japan.

It’s a shame because Japanese kids’ mathematical and science skills are very good, but later, corporate bureaucracy is very deep

True. But it's mostly due to demographics. Japan got old. No immigration.

Japan needs to get their birthrate up. NO africans or muslimes, either. A DICTATOR or a STRONGMAN needs to take back Japan from a social aspect. OR maybe a cultural minister doing his thing would help. No more manga, and that school girl furry trans cartoon shit they’ve had going on over there for 30 years. Get the men to be more manly and get the women to accept their true role in a prosperous and strong society

Japan’s GDP per capita has essentially flatlined (actually declined slightly) since 1995, and is not even 1/2 that of the USA.

Back around 2000 someone said the Japanese economy was “a bug in search of a windshield”. It looks like it still is. Or maybe it’s just sort of a slow implosion. The demographics is disastrous too: It’s one thing to have a declining population, it’s another to have a declining population AND a stalled economy. By comparison, South Korea’s population growth has essentially stopped, but their GDP per capita is still rising. Given the world catching on fire, South Korea’s large growth as a weapons supplier may well keep their rising GDP per capita... rising.

China, da, but why India? It has not been significantly aggressive.

Given Argentina’s history, that “if” is, economically and politically speaking, about the height of the lower stratosphere.

That’s if they can stay the course. I’d love it if they could, but liberals in every country want to spend the kitty on themselves and to hell with everybody else.

Including the children.

One of the main reasons for trans girls in USA along with teachers.

India: A country so successful that its brightest people move to Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Fiji, Mauritius and damn near every other country on the globe.

Everything is made up. How can a country that is covered in garbage, whose people lie to every non-indian as easily as they breathe, use the streets to defecate, bathe and eat literal cow dung, and not understand the dangers of being close to a train, possibly surpass Japan’s economy? Japan has tons of material and cultural exports. India is a third world country and will always stay that way.

China is questionable. China is in depression from which it can not recover in the foreseeable future.

What was, isn’t

The opposite is true of India. India has finally overcome and removed the fear of colonial rule. India has no communist disease to inhibit capitalism. Having the largest population of any nation on earth, it is rational to assume a very large economy.

Anime and manga are probably the biggest cultural exports any country has by a lot. They also have some of the largest car manufacturers in the world.

You kidding? China overwhelms us with cheap products, India with cheap labor. And that labor then takes over HR and hires more Indian labor. As an IT professional, I've seen first hand the devastation caused to the US. In the 70s there was barely a hundred thousand Indians in the US, now, many 10s of MILLIONS. Our "STEM" graduations, what few can get seats in US schools, can't get employed because of the Indian-favoritism. I'd run every single Indian out of the country--any H1B or other visa holder, send them home tomorrow.

Just like the invasion over the southern border, we have an educated and uneducated replacement invasion actively underway. Our country is being overrun and stolen right before our own eyes.
