Russian forces have attacked across the Ukrainian border to the north of Kharkiv in a potential effort to open a new front in the war and intensify the pressure on Ukraine’s second city.
Ukraine’s defence ministry said there had been “an attempt by the enemy to break through our defence line using armoured vehicles” at about 5am on Friday near the town of Vovchansk, and the initial attacks had been repelled.
There were also reports of fighting in the border villages of Strilecha, Pylna and Borysivka farther west, and that Russian forces had advanced by about 1km around Vovchansk, though these could not be confirmed.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said his country’s forces had been ready for the attack. “Ukraine met them there with troops – brigades and artillery,” he said at a press conference in Kyiv, though he warned that Russia could send more troops to support its fresh attack.
The influential Russian military blogger Rybar described the attack as a “reconnaissance in force” rather than a full-scale assault, and described the battle zone as being expanded to “a depth of 2-3km” in some border areas. Attacks were aimed at Ukrainian artillery points to weaken defences, the blogger added.
Russia has been gradually intensifying military operations around Kharkiv over the past month, taking advantage of limited Ukrainian air defences to bomb in and around the city in an attempt to persuade more of its 1.3 million residents to flee and turn it into an increasingly depopulated grey zone.

The Ukraine-haters on FR also hate Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Not only are those countries coveted by Putin but they hate them because the Baltic states are enthusiastic and generous Ukraine supporters.
Konstantin Samoilov, in his Friday INSIDE RUSSIA rundown of the week, showed a video clip of Putin shaking hands with top Russian military officials who took part in the Moscow Victory Day parade. Two of the officers did not salute Putin and much of the line had body language showing less-than-respect for the quarter century dictator. Combined with other Russian news it perhaps indicates that Putin’s desperate hold on power is showing signs of a weakening trajectory.
You are failing to take into account that it is the Russians who are assaulting across open ground against intrenched defensive positions. In the meantime the Ukrainians are remaining in the protective positions in the trenches.
You are overlooking that it is an artillery duel, fought at range, where one side enjoys a 10:1 advantage. The Russians do not fight at close range until after they have reduced the town or village to a moonscape. When the Russians meet the surviving Ukes, they are all suffering from repeated concussions. The best fortified entrenchment does not protect from the concussions. It sucks to be the one lacking artillery shells in an artillery battle. Adding to the misery is Ukrainian air defense systems have been largely destroyed, and Russia has an air force with glide bombs, plus drones to go right into the trench or drop bombs in the trench. That's why Ukraine is running out of men on the front lines and Russia is not.
Get serious. This is not WW1 and is not being fought with WW1 weapons. WW1 did not feature overhead surveillance.
Nice theory but that is not what is happening on the ground. The Russians no longer have the unlimited supplies of artillery that they enjoyed at the start of the war. There have been many complaints by Russian soldiers that they have had inadequate artillery support. Videos show them repeatedly attacking across open fields with little support and suffering devastating casualties. No, this is not just the artillery duel with the Russian infantry advancing latter to mop up the Ukrainian positions that you think it is.
I have read the threads and what you said to other people and simply state the truth. MSM BELIEVERS are very rare here at FR and they are always of the DNC Ilk. It takes a special type of FReeper to be a Zeeper - you have to suspend your understanding that the MSM is a paid organ of the DNC-CIA nexus and to hype the MSM’s propoganda on Ukraine is to be in lock step on J6 or anyother issue they present for public consumption.
Usually those who seep into the leftist ideological camp are the McCain/Romney backstabbers.... But I firmly believe those who hype the MSM narrative on Ukraine are simply Democrats (Independents are spineless folks with conviction and are usually fine with the democrats).
