New technologies that will make monitoring drivers' behavior easy and comprehensive … will soon also be mandatory.
H.R. 3684, an “infrastructure” bill signed by Joe Biden in 2021 included a provision mandating expanded monitoring of folks as they drive an automobile. And henceforth the intrusive technologies will be required in all new vehicles being manufactured and sold in the U.S.
New vehicles will be required to have passive monitoring systems to assess each driver’s behavior. An algorithm will determine if the driver is too impaired to operate the vehicle. If so, the vehicle will either be disabled, or some as yet unexplained system or entity will take control of it.
Several obvious questions arise.
What will constitute “impairment?” Who or what might take control of the vehicle, and in what specific circumstances? And how? How long will data detailing driver behavior be stored? Where? Who will have access to it? In what other situations might the government take control of a driver’s vehicle? Is this unconstitutional, contra to protections under the Bill of Rights?
And what about hackers?!
We have seen how other government mandates, programs, and policies, almost all supposedly “for our own good,” have worked out. Think of the “Patriot Act,” the Department of Homeland Security, the TSA, or the lockdown response to the recent coronavirus pandemic, to name but a few. If you wanted to work out at a gym, attend a family member’s wedding — or funeral— well, sorry.
Is it really far-fetched to imagine that you won’t be allowed to drive if you have exceeded your monthly greenhouse gas emission limit? Or that your car might be disabled if you are on your way to purchase a firearm or attend a Trump rally, or the future equivalent thereof?

When you plug an EV into a public charger it collects everything
Big Brother needs to be removed from a lot of things....especially vehicles.
We have a president governing while impaired. Where is the technology to put a stop to that???
I’d bring up that pesky Fourth Amendment, but once they deal with the Supreme Court, it won’t be an issue.
Blame Biden. Im sure the Repukes could have filibustered and chose to do nothing. Im well past blaming Biden for everything. He could do nothing if congress opposed anything. They sre with him.
They have (and will continue to have) surveillance on every aspect of your life. YOU are being spied on every day of your life. This will continue as long as the infrastructure holds.
I will replace my 13 yr. old Ford before this takes affect——IF allowed to take affect.
Is it in ‘25 models ?
Hopefully I’ve bought the last vehicle I’m ever going to buy. If I have to buy another one and it’s equipped with this spyware, I’ll find a way to disable it, or buy an older vehicle and rebuild/restore it. None of the government’s business where I go or how I drive. Police and insurance companies already do that. This will be another epic failure. Imagine a spyware system run amok sending false data, and you’re screwed.
I believe it's mandated in cars sold after 2026. Look up the "kill switch" car legislation.
We just bought a 2024 Toyota 4 Runner...next year the 4 Runner brand will be completely redone (not positively according to those in the know)...and likely include more monitoring
Sold or manufactured?
Governments everywhere spy on you , clear bags for your garbage so they can spy on you ,LOL
Pretty soon there won’t be simple pull-overs, and releases by cops... they will issue an order to have the car examined to see if any of the big brother equipment and software has been tampered with too, before appearing for court on the traffic infraction that they were pulled over for.
It will result in a lot More $$ for tyrants!

Is it illegal to disconnect this equipment from your own vehicle?
I am in the market for an old (pre-1980s) diesel powered pickup truck that I can convert to running on vegetable oil.
Planning ahead for when gasoline powered vehicles and gasoline are all illegal to buy or sell.
