An aspiring medical student was left brain dead last month when his friends pushed him into a Louisiana lake knowing he couldn’t swim — and then looked on while doing nothing to save the drowning man, according to a report.
Shocking video shows the group casually peering into the water moments after they shoved Christopher Gilbert off the dock at Lake D’Arbonne in Farmerville on April 14.
At least one woman can be seen slowly entering the water before abandoning the rescue mission.
It was another 10 minutes before a patron at a nearby restaurant intervened and yanked Gilbert back to land — just in the nick of time.

A few years ago my son did jump in for a friend. They found him underwater and pulled him out and he began cpr but it was unsuccessful.
He is no longer brain dead, has been taken off life support, and is supposed to be getting better.

I don’t know if he was brain dead, but he was extremely bad off, close to death, about as close as one can and still be alive. Haven’t followed it that closely, just can not get over that he was in the water and his friends just watched him drown and did not get him out.

Rescuing someone from drowning is very dangerous, even if they could swim.
We don't know that they knew he couldn't swim.
We don't know the real timeline.

You don't come back from "brain dead" and 10 minutes without O2 should be fatal, though very cold water can mitigate this.
I'll wait for other stories before making a judgement.

He was in the water for about twenty minutes and under water for five to ten minutes.

We know that his friends did nothing for about twenty minutes. He was rescued by someone coming out of a restaurant.

Have seen only one paper that said he was brain dead. He certainly had brain damage initially.
As I said, I never make a judgement on one story.
