In response to recent minimum wage increases in California, fast food restaurants across the state are shifting to automation to get rid of wage-earning humans.
The move to making customers place orders at digital kiosks alleviates what owners say is the financial strain of rising labor costs after the minimum wage for the state’s fast food workers increased on April 1 from $16 to $20 per hour.
Harsh Ghai, a Burger King franchise owner who manages 140 outlets along the West Coast, is leading the transition to automation. He plans to introduce digital kiosks across all his restaurants within months — a drastic acceleration from his original timeline of five to 10 years.
...Rather than make less money, restaurant owners are exploring alternative strategies to maintain profitability. Reducing staff numbers appears to be their primary solution for lowering overheads.
“Undoubtedly we will lose some people. There’s no way around it. If we continue to maintain our current menu pricing and absorb higher labor costs, 100% of our restaurants won’t be profitable,” Ghai said. “We can’t raise menu prices because that will hurt traffic and we’ve already seen in the media the backlash from customers having to pay more for burgers because of food price inflation.”

I remember using those as a kid
I just can’t remember exactly where it was - maybe inside a department store?
NYC and other large cities................
They knew exactly what they were doing. This is a win for them. Fast food is bad for you and eating meat if bad for the planet. Laying off a few new hires is vastly worth the price for the greater good. It's a sacrifice they are willing to make.
It was somewhere here in the Midwest - decades and decades ago
Maybe I was at a Woolsworth? Can’t remember if they had them.
Then again, may have just been at a cafeteria with my parents back then and this was how you got a piece of pie
My first thought - “this will likely result in better service.”
NOT a bad idea.
but we gleefully cheer the death of dying paper media don’t we?
smart kids now are making money from tik tok and other digital type of work, such as music production made easy with free digital audio workstation right from your phone...etc
dumb inferior but resourceful kids are selling their own home grown weed on tik tok since you can now easily buy high quality seeds and you can easily learn how to set up a working tent farms with parts purchased from amazon.
dumber kids flash mob store using Instagram, tik tok to coordinate.
More selfishly, the Democrats (ALWAYS demos) want to skim all of that “relief/support” $$. Every time someone is put out of a job the state budget goes up (refilled by Fed $$, BYWay) and there is another pot to skim.
Yes, I know that, as I am a small business owner.
here
why? I’d be happier that there are no cashiers to mess up the order
we pulled into a chik fila yesterday- 100% of parking near the store was for curbside pick up or online orders. 1 or 2 were for handicapped.
you are expected to park and walk if you wanted to enter the store.
Only fools could not see this coming. I suspect they’ll outlaw the robots.
This should come as no surprise as it is a well known principle in economics that labor and capital are interchangeable. As labor costs rise it becomes possible to automate many jobs and produce as much for less cost.
Not only Boosh clan worshiped the United Nations - hence their love for the “New World Order”.
Fundamental change
Barack Obama
A lot of people are in for the one world order idea aka massive socialism and 1984 all in one package.
Interestingly, most customers prefer waiting in line in their cars to order and then be served.
= = =
Interestingly, my wife’s last trip to a McDonalds was not happy.
She wanted a drink, and the employees said use the kiosk, that’s the only way, and then laughed at her and would not take the simple order at the counter.
Same. Sometimes they offer free food with the phone app.
Robots don’t spit in your food..and they don’t go to the bathroom and not wash their hands.
Yeah, and a little 30W Oil and a loose bolt never hurt anybody.
