Like millions of people in the US, artificial intelligence was just something Dianne Balon read about on the news.
Little did she know the tech would come to save her life.
Despite being a picture of health, an AI-powered blood test in 2022 revealed that one of the world's deadliest cancers was silently forming in Ms Balon's pancreas.
It caught the tumor in its earliest form, before it had the chance to grow and spread, which is when the vast majority of pancreatic cancers are caught - at which point it's too late.
The results of the test provided a key 'piece of the puzzle'. The now-62-year-old went on to have surgery to remove the lesion that would've developed into 'full-blown pancreatic cancer,' according to her surgeon.
'I am incredibly grateful,' she told DailyMail.com. 'AI absolutely saved my life, I won the lottery.'
She revealed that even her surgeon was caught off-guard before the operation, telling her: 'Why are you here? We don't usually get to see people this early in the process.'
Ms Balon's cancer journey began in 2017 at a health conference, which she was attending through her work as vice president at a Canadian health insurer.
The mother-of-two, from Edmonton, Canada, saw a presentation by Molecular You, a Vancouver biotech startup that had just launched a new blood test.
It works by analyzing more than 250 biomarkers which even the most sophisticated blood tests available in most hospitals cannot detect.
The results are then run through a database by an AI program trained to look for subtle changes to immune markers and inflammation, amongst other things.

I’ve heard that everyone has cancer cells all the time, but the immune system eliminates it. So-called AI should be turned on strengthening the immune system to function effectively against cancer and pathogens. In other words, focus on health, not doctors, pharmaceuticals, and the medical establishment.
True. I would like to know the sensitivity and specificity of this test, and then calculate its positive predictive value. As you suggested, a test for a disease with a low prevalence that has a non-trivial false-positive rate will have a low PPV.
I’ve had the privilege of working in that field of endeavor late in my career as a software engineer. We studied the proclivity of breast and uterine cancer in women. I think we accomplished some good things for mankind using support vector machine technology.
My classmate has pancreatic cancer treated with a Whipple procedure (and prior chemo/radiation). The Whipple wasn't 100% fix for him. His "clue" was development of Type 1 diabetes and severe weight loss. My ampullary cancer was heralded by a rise in liver enzyme ALP. The tumor blocked the path to my duodenum and caused the common bile duct to dilate from a normal 4mm to well over 17mm with bile backup into my blood. The path to detection started with a blood test in January. Sonograms, MRCP, CT, colonoscopy, transoral endoscopy and an ERCP have culminated on April 17th with a referral for a Whipple. May 16th brings a consult with the surgeon. The Whipple follows.
And perhaps some scary things too.

The term “AI” is used differently than it once was. Get over it.

It’s used as a marketing term now by just about anybody and everybody with software (even if it’s just a device with a chip and built in configuration), so I don’t have to “get over it”. I’m not going to cry or throw a tantrum because it’s not that important to me, but it’s a ridiculous mis-appropriation, and it’s not even common or colloquial parlance change, it’s commercial deceit. So I’m happy to correct it when I see it.
If opposing counsel is Alvin Bragg, AI might tell him he’s an idiot and his case is totally bogus to begin with.
AI is capable and has diagnosed forms of cancer by looking at X-Rays. However, the test cases involved looking at “skeletons” of black and white folks — still alive, BTWay. However, since the discovered cancers were exclusively in the blacks; the test was ruled racist. No whites were found to have those cancers.
The program was then cancelled.
Technology is routinely suppressed if it offends certain parties. Not unethical or hiding facts — just if someone’s FeeFees are hurt.
Imagine being on your deathbed and wondering if you’d be OK if someone had not interfered in the medicine applied to you. Imagine losing a child for the same reason.
Most of the people using this term are probably unaware of the marketing aspect (if any) of their work. It just emerged the way the word "car" replaced carriage or cart.

No information on how many false positives. There are many other factors involved in this one situation beyond this one test.
