Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry.

While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951.

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division

Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951

Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H.

G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952

Citation:

Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Hey there, radu!

Oh, yeah. It got up to 95 toasty degrees. I am NOT ready for this! 🔥

I’m glad you had a nice warm day without it being too hot. Sorry about the wind, though. I know that didn’t enhance the day for sure.

Good evening, Pro...did you get to have some son time this weekend?

We’ve had 2 days of sunshine. Hoping it sticks this time.

Ugh! I don’t think anyone is ever ready for that, even in the middle of summer. Heck, it was 91 this afternoon in KS at the eagles’ nest. Sweet Ellie did her best to shade her eaglets but they were all three miserable.

The wind and a couple of light showers this afternoon pretty much knocked out any thoughts of doing yard work that I had in mind. Oh well. It’ll get done at some point.

The bright spot was a couple of hours ago when I got a call asking me to head up to the museum tomorrow to help with a tour. I’ll head out shortly since I have to get up in the morning.

WooHoo! That’s awesome that you get to go up to the museum tomorrow. What a nice surprise. To heck with yard work. LOL! As you said....it will get done sometime. :)

I fear that 95 is just the beginning. However, after Tuesday, it will cool back down at least for a bit.

I was sitting at the computer desk when I felt the trembling. At first I thought it was my neighbors dancing, but then I saw the walls start to tremble.

Just like being back in California!

I watched the partial eclipse through my glasses. Eclipse after earthquake — truly Divine messages.

Right now the weather spiked up. But will go back later this week.

I’m looking forward to it but wish I’d had a little more notice. Someone who was going to be there can’t make it so I was asked. Happy to oblige!

At least you know this heat isn’t going to last but a couple of days. It’ll be comfy enough here but there’s rain in the forecast several days.

Time to head out to get things done and hit the sack. Not sleepy at all but I need to try to go to sleep.
Catch ya tomorrow.

I see that. It’ll still be light after 9:00. I don’t know if I could get used to the crazy daytime/nighttime up there. LOL

Oh I’m glad it wasn’t something brand new to you. It IS disconcerting to see your walls trembling.

We got nothing of the eclipse...that I would have liked to see.

Stay cool!

Yeah, real tough call. LOL
I’m looking forward to it. And to next weekend when we’re back in full swing again.

Time to head out. I’m not going to like my alarm very much in the morning.

The bad part of it is that you lose complete track of time.

All of a sudden it is 10p or later and you had no clue cuz it’s still light outside. LOL!

Hiya radu!

Good weekend and the weather has been hot and dry; son and I have been hanging out quite a bit recently which makes me very happy.

Is it museum time next weekend?

A very pleasant good Monday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country.

Yesterday at Comanche Lake:

We also had KFC for supper.
