Gov. Ron DeSantis signs legislation hiking criminal penalties for retail thieves and "porch pirates"

"We're not gonna put up with that [...] Your package is gonna be there, and if it's not, someone is gonna have hell to pay."

"We will raise penalties [...] They are going to be deterred."

"We are gonna hold people accountable."

This law will probably be found to be racially insensitive. You know the reason why

No cats. No porch bandits. In fact, no porch. I live in a small apartment building. But it would have been a hoot if they had taken the kitty poop.

It is my personal opinion that booby traps should be legal.

If you want to be a bleeding heart we can go for "less lethal" but fixing a package so it sprays you and your vehicle with a good amount of purple ink is more then fair.

But they have gone after people who put glitter bombs inside stolen packages because "it could have gotten in their eyes!".

Don't care.

Leave other people's stuff alone.

I suspect that many of the players have gone on to their reward, since some links are now dead and some FReepers have been banned.

(From KSS WIKI article)

On May 10, 1837 in New York, every chartered bank stopped payment in specie (gold and silver coinage), leaving banks and local institutions like the KSS holding notes without adequate liquid assets.
Within two months the failures in New York alone aggregated nearly $100,000,000 in value.
"Out of eight hundred and fifty banks in the United States, three hundred and forty-three closed entirely, sixty-two failed partially, and the system of State banks received a shock from which it never fully recovered."[8]
Smaller, privately held financial institutions, like the KSS, also failed in droves.
The Panic was followed by a five-year depression, characterized by ongoing failures of banks and financial institutions and record unemployment levels.

Boy!

I'm sure glad the USA isn't in a fix like THIS!

My point was the thief can’t know if he intends to become a felon or a mere misdemeanor-person.

Getting fried for a felony is a very different outcome from picking up a box that may only contain a Frisbee!

And I took it that you were concerned about the welfare of the criminal more than the victim.

Sorry if I came off strong on that.

I See your point...but everyone elses point is, why does it even matter if the thief cant know if he is about to commit a fel,ony or not.

I some weird world...why would someone have a box that say “Under $40” to ensure the would be thief stays under the $40 thresh hold?

Wouldn’t just be better to keep the would be thief guessing...thus more likely to not commit the crime at all due to lack of certainty that he/she is about to possibly commit a felony?

https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/felony

A felony is a type of offense punishable under criminal law. Many states classify felonies under different categories depending on the seriousness of the crime and its punishment. In most cases, if a felony is not classified by a letter grade in the section defining it, the felony is classified as follows:

Class A: if the maximum term of imprisonment authorized is life imprisonment, or if the maximum penalty is death.

Class B: if the maximum term of imprisonment authorized is twenty-five years or more.

Class C: if the maximum term of imprisonment authorized is less than twenty-five years but ten or more years.

Class D: if the maximum term of imprisonment authorized is less than ten years but five or more years.

Class E: if the maximum term of imprisonment authorized is less than five years but more than one year.

However, some states do not classify felonies by categories. Thus, the sentencing is made on a crime-by-crime basis.

Believe it or not, there are still poor ppl in this country. I get upset when the govt or a city acts like everyone has a money tree in the backyard and can afford to buy the latest gadget or appliance or car they deem necessary for the “survival of our civilization.” For the record, we have a Wyze camera on both the porch and patio, but I realize not everyone has the extra cash for such luxuries.

If the thief (through sale of the goods or loss) disposes of his gains, what charges can be levied against him??
