Party machinery, underway since 2021, will make it easier for the “next Trump” to emerge. But what will actually propel such a figure into the White House is the transformation of the GOP base.
The increasingly reactionary views of grassroots Republicans virtually guarantee that the movement will maintain its dominant influence on the party for the foreseeable future.
A yard sign I saw in rural Pennsylvania during the 2020 presidential campaign tells the story. Planted in front of a house was a homemade poster with the words “RONALD REAGAN IS A LOSER.” President Reagan’s face was crossed out with an X, with Donald Trump’s smiling face next to it. Presumably this was a Trump supporter, but why attack Reagan? The 40th president was beloved by Republicans, not on the ballot, long dead and certainly not a threat to Trump. The last assumption is where I was wrong.

Well, yes. If you keep punching Americans in the face in what amounts to a knockout game played by both the drmoncraps and the party that supposedly represents you, then yes, eventually you’re going to react. Maybe go Rudyard Kipling on them.
“The government is gaining waaaaaay to much power...”
Thats our fault BTW...we’ve let them get away with it for 3 generations
Bull excrement.
The opposite of populism is elitism, the ideology that asserts the governed are not qualified to choose political leaders from among their ranks and that the only legitimate political leaders come from an entitled, hereditary political class.
The elitists are the authoritarians.
If Trump loses we lose everything. Period.
“But what will actually propel such a figure into the White House is the transformation of the GOP base.”
The GOP base has NOT ‘transformed’. They were hesitant when Reagan tried Amnesty and outright HATED IT when Bush Jr. tried to do the same, and that was NEARLY 20 YEARS AGO. In between that, they really liked Perot pointing out the damage that Globalism was doing to the country.
What transformed is that the GOP business interests DIVERGED from the GOP base, mainly on immigration, but now going around the world starting wars, and with some of those wars being EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
And so the GOP Leadership had to choose, do they stick with the business interests that want mass immigration (for cheap labor), Globalism (for cheap products), and wars (for more ‘hardware’ sales), or do they stick with the base.
The GOP Leadership figured that the base was too stupid to realize that the GOP Leadership made the WRONG CHOICE...and now they pay.
They are realizing that increasing numbers of right wingers have decided that the system is so corrupt that extreme measures may be needed.
To make fools like this writer think Republicans no longer like Reagan.
Democrats are a threat to democracy.
100% BS.
We have not transformed, we just got sick of being lied to by the GOP. So we decided to take over and elected a general who will fight for what we always wanted.
“The lasting threat is not the ‘next Trump,’ but the MAGA base”
Good.
And they say there’s no good news.
It’s those danderous insurrectionists who still believe that the US Constitution has any significance at all.....
hey you’all did you know any trump supporters are part of a cult Who knew
this moron opinion piece is just so much progressive BS
I’m sitting here pondering what the rebellion forces’ uniforms will look like in the future. Red? Flagged adorned? or more tactical?
Sorry Miles...the threat is YOU.
“Reactionary” is an 1840’s term, friend, as Marx used it (if memory serves) in the Communist Manifesto.
In Marxist thought, the “forces of reaction” and “reactionaries” are folk who don’t want to be murdered in the name of the revolution.
You nailed it brother!
Just Wanting to be left alone is a reactionary move to these types.
“Reactionary” is communist terminology which is of course what we’re dealing with.
