Half of senior staffers in Congress are so fed up that they may quit
The Washington Post ^ | March 30, 2024 | Paul Kane

When it comes to job satisfaction, members of Congress aren’t the only ones considering calling it quits.

Only about one in five senior aides on Capitol Hill believe that Congress is “functioning as a democratic legislature should,” and about the same margin believe that it is “an effective forum for debate” on key issues.

Given those assessments by the people who live and breathe these issues, this particularly glum finding should not come as a surprise: Almost half of senior congressional aides are considering leaving the Hill because of “heated rhetoric from the other party.”

These are just some of the findings from an investigation by the Congressional Management Foundation, a nonprofit that aims to improve both lawmaker effectiveness and constituent engagement. Situated seven blocks away from the Capitol in Eastern Market, the foundation conducts seminars for staff and offers research to outside groups trying to figure out the byzantine ways of the House and Senate.

Over the past seven years, the foundation has conducted three very deep dives into the lives of senior staff in Congress, understanding that these unelected officials wield tremendous clout and that their positive outlook — or lack thereof — can deeply affect the health of the institution.

It’s a good thing that millions of illegal alien foreign invaders are pouring into America. We’re going to need them to do the jobs in the District of Corruption that “americans” don’t want to do. Capital Hill has hundreds of openings everyday.

Good, quit and go get a job selling popsicles. None of them are worth a tinker’s damn anyway.

Little whiners all of them.

What does “functioning as a democratic legislature” mean?

I doubt it. Like the higher ups, they too are feeding at the trough with far too many perks that they could never match.

But by all mean, please do.

The United States of America should not work as a Democratic organization. It is a republic!

I think that the partisan non-permanent Congressional staff in both House and Senate should come from the district and state of the congresscritter and senator. Their states should pick up the tab, after all the state benefits in pork delivered by their congresscritters/senators. If this was done there would be more focus on “back home” and less on the betterment of the Beltway & K street. The staff should feel that loyalty even if its only through their paycheck to the folks back home. It also would deemphasize the “staff” as a unanswerable independent power in Congress. It wouldn’t eliminate that but it would greatly trim its sails. Staffers from the permanent select committees should entirely come from the GS bureaucracy and should have limited time there before rotating back to their home agencies. The Congressional O&M people clerical, maintenance, IT & security should be administered by an independent commission. Particularly the Capital police no more private armies for future Pelosies!

Just another DC non-profit trying to justify its existence and drum up some more research money. Of course they're going to find issues -- that's the "business" they're in.

They are talking their book and promoting their own service. They know full well that these staffers are denizens of the DC Swamp and aren't going anywhere else.

The most convincing (to me anyway) argument against term limits is that if the representatives are regularly cycled, new representatives who want to make a bang in DC become increasingly reliant upon a permanent class of unelected staffers who actually run the show without ever having to answer to voters.

John Fetterman’s profound disability earlier in his term pulled the curtain back a bit, he was mostly meandering through the halls in a hoodie while a former Harry Reid staffer was doing all the work behind the scenes. This is everywhere.
