The pilot of the cargo ship that knocked down a highway bridge into Baltimore Harbor had radioed for tugboat help and reported a power loss minutes earlier, federal safety officials say, citing new data from the freight's recorder.

NTSB's investigator in charge, Marcel Muise, said the recovered voyage data recorder (VDR) had helped them establish a timeline of events.
He said the ship had departed from Seagirt Marine Terminal at around 12:39am and had entered the Fort McHenry Channel at 1:07am, before "numerous audible alarms" were recorded on the audio from the ship's bridge at 1:24am.
At about the same time, the data stopped recording, though it resumed shortly after tapping into a redundant power source, Mr Muise said.
At 1:26am, the ship's pilot made a high frequency radio call for tugboats to assist the Dali in what Ms Homendy said was the first sign of needing help.
The pilot later dropped the port anchor and made another radio call at 1:27am, reporting the ship had lost all power and was approaching the bridge

Apparently it doesn’t matter. We make ships so big now and have so much momentum that the anchors can’t stop them. The anchors are just for show I guess.
You have no control over when you figure out you have a problem. Sometimes it’s too late.
Anchors must at least allow for a vessel of that size to be insured! :-D
Anchors have never been about stopping ships. Anchors are for controlling drift of already stopped ships. They were most used for exploring ships, ie when you wanted to park a ship where there was no port. And get used in heavy weather. But they’ve never been like in the movies.
“ I’ll ask you all again...
What direction does a ship go if it loses steering capability?
The direction it was ALREADY GOING!”
Not exactly. If you crank the rudder to the side and cut power, it will coast into the turn. IF the rudder was hard over prior to losing power they may nit have been able to straighten it out.
The FSK bridge opened in 1977. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge allision was in 1980.
Yes. I tried to replace the brakes on my wife’s car this morning and the new pads wouldn’t fit. It says “made in China” on the pads but that’s just how Mossad works!
referring to the rebuild of Sunshine Skyway bridge. Rebuilt with hardened pylon barriers/bollards on each side of the main centerline of the bridge- the crossunder portion used by major ships. In any case-all of our major port bridges should have been hardened ever since 9-11. Notwithstanding potential harbor blockage by sinking, which btw was a secondary goal of the jap empire to obstruct the channel in Pearl Harbor in 1941- not a new idea iow.
I understand these ship Black boxes are very basic. Probably little to be learned. I’m more interested in reports that it had electrical issues that were supposedly repaired in port.
Yep, and they typically don't have top speeds of 100 knots/hour so they could cross the bay and reach the ship in seconds.
Granted this isn’t the Dali but it is typical of setup .
Dali size containership steering system. How it’s designed to not hit Francis Scott key bridge
I am beginning to suspect that the Dali’s Emergency Diesels never successfully lit off.
emergency rudder system takes 30 seconds to fire up. The Baltimore ship looks like it lost power inside the 30 second window based on the video. What’s weird is that the ship looked out of position as it aimed towards the channel, too narrow a path and thus no time to recover ?
YEARS!!
