In response to NASA’s report that a total solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024, New York authorities are warning New Yorkers to be prepared.
In a recent press release by the New York state police, officials warned residents to be prepared for cellular disruptions, slow 9/11 response times, gridlocked traffic, and food/water demand during the upcoming total solar eclipse.
Also included in the press release was a list of suggestions calling for residents to stock up on food, water, and fuel.
The warning by New York state police comes as the department looks to learn from their responses to the 2017 solar eclipse.
Per New York State Police:
The New York State Police, in close collaboration with other state, local, and federal law enforcement, emergency services, and transportation agencies, has meticulously developed an emergency operation plan. Our unwavering goal is to provide a comprehensive and uniform presence, ensuring the safety of both visitors and residents as they experience and travel home from the eclipse. Members of the State Police will implement security measures appropriate for large gatherings and take all necessary actions to maintain order and smooth traffic flow.
Building on past experiences, the planning process for this event has been proactive, aiming to address potential impacts within Troop E. Our goal is to minimize any adverse effects associated with the large influx of visitors to the local area. This approach is based on the lessons learned from the 2017 solar eclipse, where some regions experienced a 100 percent increase in their population in the days leading up to and during the eclipse.

Absolutely ridiculous
Very few people actually read the article, it plainly says the population of these area’s will increase by up to 100%. So its not the eclipse its the influx of lots of people causing traffic jams, power usage etc.
We already have a “large influx of visitors” to local areas and it’s not confined to New York. How about millions of “visitors” coming in unchecked and wreaking havoc. Nothing to do with the sun or the moon.
Where does NY get these people?

The warnings to prep for April 8, appear to be for the stupidity of human behavior noted to be localized for the New York City area natives only.
Schools in Michigan are closing early due yo the eclipse. I think they assume everyone will be trying to see the sky and not working. If my memory is correct they closed early when I was a kid in the 60s/70s (not dure), too.

Interesting, I went to Mazatlan to see the 1991 total solar eclipse in July. Got cloudy at the last minute. I was in my MI hometown for the 1994 annular solar eclipse which was kind of cool.
The diminished light during an eclipse looks a lot different than clouds or dusk, everything is brilliantly crisp but darker.
My brother has manufactured solar eclipse filters for almost 40 years. He is operating 24/7 and can’t wait for this to end. He turned me into the science nerd that I am, being 9 years older he got me into astronomy and photography before I was 10.
He can predict trends in his industry tens of thousands of years in the future.

The eclipse will be going over northern New York State—hundreds of miles from New York City.
The biggest problems come when idiots from metro New York City clog the highways going upstate.

I think kids at home are in greater danger of injuring their eyes. Many not really supervised so looking at eclipse w/o protective lenses.

The eclipse is a predictable event that can be scheduled around.
That’s the path of totality.
Most of the 48 contiguous might get enough if a partial to affect solar production.
But that is predictable and can be figured in.
Unless something else happens.
Calling it "providing security for the solar eclipse" will allay any civilian concerns about what is in fact an opportunity to run another quasi military exercise for urban warfare on American soil and acclimate Americans to the coming military law.
