(The Center Square) - The monthly costs for the thrifty plan for a family of four participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is increasing by 31% over the last three years.

The United States Department of Agriculture stated the food stamp benefit amounts are based every year upon the cost of the Thrifty Food Plan.

The thrifty plan is considered the cost of groceries needed to provide a healthy, cost-friendly diet for families to prepare at home. The foods include dark green vegetables, poultry, and whole fruit, according to the USDA website.

These meals serve as a model for nutrition, now the typical meal for a family of four has increased in cost by 31% from January 2021 to January 2024, according to reports.

The cost for a family of four under the thrifty plan in 2021 with children 6-8 and 9-11 was $675 a month. The United States Department of Agriculture’s 2023 updated thrifty plan for a family of four with children 6-8 and 9-11 now totals $975.90 monthly.

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recommends meals for people on food stamps that their allotment is based upon.

The thrifty meal plan must be re-evaluated every five years as of 2022 as directed by the 2018 Farm Bill.

yes, the current regime in WashingtonDC has hiked grocery prices by at least 31% (some prices on things we buy often are up 50 percent or more)

it may be part of the “population replacement plan” to starve out the existing citizenry (while importing millions of illegals from Communist China and every Islamic Krapistan on earth)?

naw, that’s just conspiracy theory

Carried it in two bags...

I remember my mom and dad being outraged at being able to carry $10 worth of groceries in only 2 bags. But this was the early 50s.

Sounds about right.

The Dollar of today is worth only 1/10 or what it was then.

Gas was 25-30 cents then, $3+ now.

There’s a Bogart movie, I think The Big Sleep where he’s making a phone call from a cafe and you can see the menu and the prices. I think a big breakfast was like 50¢. Makes you shake your head.

People on food stamps who have a family of four do get a max of 975 dollars a month. They aren’t hurt a bit. The rest of us are hurt.

My math may be off but 675 to 975 seems more than 31%. A $300 increase from 675 is more like 44%. I guess there are items in that group which for some reason they don’t count as part of their bureaucratic CPI.

Idiots can’t do math.

That’s NOT a ‘31%’ increase.

It’s a 44.6% increase.
