Column: As measles spreads, 'herd stupidity' grips Florida's government
LA Times ^ | Feb 27, 2024 | Michael Hiltzik

Posted on 02/27/2024 9:31:58 PM PST by where's_the_Outrage?

As of this writing, the measles outbreak in Florida is up to nine cases, including the first one recorded outside the epicenter in Broward County, the vicinity of Fort Lauderdale.

Nine cases may not seem like a lot, but it's enough to alarm epidemiologists. They point out that measles is among the most contagious viruses known to humankind, which means that the cases identified thus far are likely to be the tip of the iceberg.

Who's unconcerned? The chief public health official of the state of Florida, that's who. He's Joseph Ladapo, who I earlier identified as "the most dangerous quack in America."

That was before the measles outbreak, when Ladapo was known chiefly for opposing COVID vaccination despite incontrovertible evidence that it saves lives.

1 in 5 will be hospitalized, 1 in 20 will develop pneumonia (the most common way measles kills young kids), 1 in 1,000 will develop encephalitis (infection of the brain, sometimes causing permanent brain damage), and 1-3 in 1,000 will die.

Epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelina on measles Ladapo has now cemented his position at the top of the list of public officials hazardous to your health. He did so with a letter issued Feb. 20 to parents with children at the elementary school suffering the outbreak........

To put it another way, Ladapo's appeal to the principle of "herd immunity" is outweighed by the herd stupidity of the anti-vaccination movement that he is a part of.

She also points out that "unvaccinated kids can still get protection from a vaccine within 72 hours of exposure." That generally reduces the severity of symptoms. But Ladapo didn't point that out.

Per the NIH the mortality rate for measles in developed countries is .1%

You need a different argument.

Meanwhile, looks like more people are harmed by adverse events related to MMR vaxxes than croak from measles.

Now why does that sound familiar...? 🤔

“The vaccines work, re measles; those who get the shots don’t get it.”

So . . . If you believe that and want the vax get it, and you’re protected. If you don’t want it, don’t get it.

Don’t tell me to get it to protect you. That’s Slavery.

Maximum Liberty.

Measles is caused by a virus.

Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine +zinc may work against it. These should be made as easy to get as aspirin. It is a scandal that these require prescription.

You’re kinda missing the point.

If measles vaccines work, then a measles outbreak will only affect people who haven’t been vaccinated. What’s the purpose of keeping unvaccinated people isolated if the only danger is to themselves?

All of the real vaxes are going to be mRNA fake vaxes one of theses days. May have already happened because we would not be told the truth.

The original real vaccine worked.

In LA a child has a bigger chance of being killed by a stray bullet from a drive by shooting than dying of measles.

California is such a toxic mess that the LAT tries to find comfort by ginning up propaganda about the new Great Satan - Florida.

“Obviously since you are posting measles was not deadly to you as you are not dead. You do not list what issues you have so how am I supposed to make an informed decision on the vaccine benefits?”

I had a neighbor growing up who contracted measles in the 1950’s when he was 8 years old, which resulted in a lifelong intellectual disability. He had normal intellect until then, but after contracting measles, his brain never developed beyond the intellect of a young child.

This used to be a common childhood disease. Let the “herd” make their choices — and suffer the consequences if they are wrong. That’s how people learn.

If you’ve raised your daughter not to sleep around, she has no need for the HPV shot.

Since it’s spread by sexual activity I would think that to be the case.

A return of Measles, Malaria, and other nasty diseases the US has cured decades ago! I read that some man had dozens of maggots pulled out of his nose. Can a screw worm fly infestation be next?
Wonder where they all came from!

I'm old enough to have been one of those infected with measles before the vaccine was available. And you're correct - we pretty much all got it and I don't know anyone who died from it.

While that was the typical outcome, it wasn't so in every case. Author Roald Dahl wrote in 1988:

Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it.

Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn't do anything.

"Are you feeling all right?" I asked her.

"I feel all sleepy," she said.

In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead.

The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her.

Roald Dahl

Dahl's experience, as well as mine, is anecdotal. Fortunately, health organizations keep track of these things. During the years I grew up, there were about 400-500 measles deaths annually, close to 50,000 hospitalizations and about 4,000 cases of encephalitis. In 1890, the Mississippi valley from the Canadian border to Missouri suffered measles deaths at a rate of 20/1000.(History of Measles) Today, in some of the poorest and unvacccinated places in the world, the rate is 1/100. (University of Oxford)

Based on this information, I'm glad my children and grandchildren were vaccinated. Others might assess the data differently.

Same here.

My parents gave me white PJs covered in red spots during that time. Was a hoot.

Redacted with Natali and Clayton Morris

The Supreme Court is hearing two landmark 1st amendment cases today that could change everything. Additionally a massive measles outbreak in 17 states has the CDC sending in special investigators to see how bad it is.
