As of this writing, the measles outbreak in Florida is up to nine cases, including the first one recorded outside the epicenter in Broward County, the vicinity of Fort Lauderdale.
Nine cases may not seem like a lot, but it's enough to alarm epidemiologists. They point out that measles is among the most contagious viruses known to humankind, which means that the cases identified thus far are likely to be the tip of the iceberg.
Who's unconcerned? The chief public health official of the state of Florida, that's who. He's Joseph Ladapo, who I earlier identified as "the most dangerous quack in America."
That was before the measles outbreak, when Ladapo was known chiefly for opposing COVID vaccination despite incontrovertible evidence that it saves lives.
1 in 5 will be hospitalized, 1 in 20 will develop pneumonia (the most common way measles kills young kids), 1 in 1,000 will develop encephalitis (infection of the brain, sometimes causing permanent brain damage), and 1-3 in 1,000 will die.
Epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelina on measles Ladapo has now cemented his position at the top of the list of public officials hazardous to your health. He did so with a letter issued Feb. 20 to parents with children at the elementary school suffering the outbreak........
To put it another way, Ladapo's appeal to the principle of "herd immunity" is outweighed by the herd stupidity of the anti-vaccination movement that he is a part of.
She also points out that "unvaccinated kids can still get protection from a vaccine within 72 hours of exposure." That generally reduces the severity of symptoms. But Ladapo didn't point that out.

Furthermore, based on the premise there is no danger to the vaxed I don't really see the problem. Risk is accepted for the unvaxed and vaxed are fine.
Yet, the snowflakes at the L.A. Times don’t worry about all of the diseases being spread by unvetted, illegal aliens.

The vaccines work, re measles; those who get the shots don't get it.
Depending on the type of measles, one can also develop
severe light sensitivity if they don’t follow some rather
simple precautions, once they’ve contracted the disease.

Measles vaccine will protect a lot of people. The ones who aren’t vaccinated will be at greater risk.

I remember having measles about 1966 and my mom putting a wet towel over my eyes to prevent excess light issues.
Measles is a serious disease. The vaccine, unlike the COVID shot, is time tested and it works.

Measles is not a serious disease, MANY, MANY, on this site had measles as a child before vaccines AND we all survived!! Natural immunity is always best!!
Was reminiscing with sis about all 3 of us kids having the measles at the same time in early 60s

Measles is a normal childhood disease, and running publ8c health like boy in a bubble is a BAD idea. Plus, if you get it as an adult, it’s much more dangerous.

My parents gave me white PJs covered in red spots during that time. Was a hoot! Loved it.
Dittos, except I had it about 1952. It was SOP for parents to expose their kids on purpose, to gain early immunity. Nobody died, nobody had lasting effects. I got a few days home from school, ice cream and ginger ale out of it.
Being deployed to Afghanistan and 3 times to Iraq I was a human pin cushion. However, the anthrax vaxes were being challenged at that time so I didn’t get them, got me to start wondering. While I had an initial smallpox around 1960 I got another in 2005 before deploying to Iraq, they said should be required every 10 years.
God blessed me with a daughter in 2013 and dutifully we got her fully vaccinated. But there was no smallpox because it was eradicated. Because of the VAX I’m now not sure what I should continue for her. For example, she is almost due for the HPV, but if you do nothing she should develop immunity to it. So why should I vax her?
So when the government says “That generally reduces the severity of symptoms.” I am now on high alert leaning towards not getting the vaccine.
You also needed to lay off watching any TV for a while.
I had a friend that was hyper-light sensitive. Any bright
light caused him some real problems. Each year he had a
hard time participating in photo day because of it.
